A Hollywood historical account of Tombstone, Arizona's famed "Shootout at the O.K. Corral" and the events that led up to it. Tension between "the Law" and "the Cowboys" stirs as the Cowboys, led by "Curly Bill" Broscius, accuse the Earps (Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan) and their outlaw and gambler associate "Doc" Holliday of interfering with their operations inside and outside of town.
Wyatt Earp along with his brothers and their wives move to Tombstone to start a new life putting his life as a lawman and gunslinger behind him. Also coming to Tombstone is Wyatt's good friend, Doc Holliday. However, it turns out that "The Cowboys", a group of men, among whose members include The Clantons, pretty much act as if they are above the law. Wyatt would be asked to be Marshall but rejects the offer but his brother, Virgil who can't stomach the violence around him accepts the job over Wyatt's objections. Eventually a confrontation between them and The Cowboys is going to happen. And who will survive?
As many others pointed out. Tombstone is the definitive Wyatt Earp film. In some cases it's historically accurate. And in some cases it's not so accurate but who cares ? The real movie is Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer as Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. It helps that they had the good sense to bring Sam Elliot on board as well. Elliot is The Western actor to turn to since John Wayne died.
Tombstone tries to tell the Story of the Gunfight at the O.K.. Corrall. The Events leading up to it and the events after.
Russell steals the film as Wyatt Earp making a classic portrayal of a classic historical figure. And Yet Val Kilmer becomes the whole show for his portrayal of the doomed yet honourable Doc.
I saw it when it came out in the theatre. And I watch it every now and then and I'm always amazed by how well a job they did. Always worth seeing just for the incredible acting of Val Kilmer. And always worth seeing Kurt Russell making Wyatt Earp a little bit more human.
Excluding him, this movie is just a typical good guy action movie off the Hollywood assembly line, of the western flavour in this particular case. A bunch of macho men blah blah blah intent on leaving their fighting days behind blah blah blah, but it doesn't go so well blah blah blah and they need to fight again blah blah blah. Obviously some romance in there as well, blah blah blah.
I mean don't get me wrong, it accomplishes that kind of movie very well and that's perfectly approvable 6/10 fun in itself, nothing bad about it. Just nothing special about it either.
However, there *is* something special about this movie - and that's Doc Holliday. What can I say, Val Kilmer manages to create just an absolutely hypnotising character whose magnetism would captivate you all the same no matter what genre this movie belonged to or in what setting it happened to take place in. I feel like the rest of the movie is just an inconsequential container vessel for this one mesmerising individual. I feel like all the clichés and banalities are there so that you could for only a brief moment make eye contact with Doc Holliday, nod in agreement, and just laugh together silently about the stupidity of all of it, each knowing that the other understands *exactly* how he feels.
I suppose if the "typical good guy action movie" REALLY isn't your thing, then just this one supporting character won't be enough to bother with the whole thing, but if this kind of movie is acceptable for you like it is for me, then you will find yourself impatiently waiting for the next moment with Doc Holliday, and you'll find the wait was worth it every single time.
A few stirring shoot-'em-ups help relieve the logjam of cliches. Director George P. (Rambo) Cosmatos does an OK job at the O.K. Corral. But even the good stuff goes on for too long.
John Henry "Doc" Holliday received a Degree of Dental Surgery from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery (now part of the University of Pennsylvania) in 1872 at the age of 20. Doc Holliday had dental offices in Atlanta, Dallas, and often practiced less formally on the side in his travels, most notably in Dodge City where he began his association with Wyatt Earp.
He stopped practicing dentistry after his tuberculosis and resultant coughing worsened. Also it would not have been practical for a man suffering from tuberculosis to be in such close contact with people, whos mouths were wide open only inches from his, a sure way of enabling the disease to spread. a5c7b9f00b
