A federal witness runs away and a team of government agents track him down, but when they take a shortcut on the return trip, they're attacked by zombies.
Smith, a mob informer hiding out with the Witness Protection Program, decides to make a break for it and hide out in the Arizona desert. The Feds catch up with him and rescue him just before a group of hitmen can manage to silence him for good. In the course of getting Smith away from the mafia thugs, the pair of agents assigned to protect him turn onto an abandoned stretch of highway nicknamed 'Route 666' after the mysterious death of a prison chain gang. As the three continue on their way, they soon discover just what happened to the chain gang, and how the highway earned its name.
It's been about thirteen years since I've heard or seen any of William Wesley's work. Thank god he's back, cause his earlier film (Scarecrows 1988) was a horror masterpiece. And when I heard he had released another, I just about flipped. With actors like Lou Diamond Phillips (Bats), Steven Williams (Jason Goes to Hell), and L.Q. Jones (The Beast Within) they make this movie ten times better. This movie has a great plot, and excellent acting. The setting is alright but it goes along with the story. Route 666 is a combination of many different things. It's a horror/action/comedy. So if you see this movie at your local video store rent it! You won't regret it. Only one thing puzzles me. Is William Wesley done with the movie making business or is he not done? Oh well, only time will tell.
I've been a huge fan of William Wesley's "Scarecrows" for a long time. When I heard about a new film that he had done, I have to say I was kind of anxious to see it. When I looked at the credits on the box, I was able to see that this had a lot of the same people involved, including Terry Plumeri doing the music again. When I saw "Route 666", it not only was much less effective than "Scarecrows", it was simply just stupid, dull, and idiotic in every way imaginable. The music was no longer creepy or original, instead it sounded like a theme for a modern-day cop show. Naturally, that's kind of how the whole movie is in a lot of ways until the supernatural elements come into play. Then it's just another piece of b-movie crap that's so below par on the enjoyment level even as a b-movie, that no matter how good the movie looks (which they went overboard with, turning what could have been good splatter scenes into brief, blurry flashes of silly action that try desperately to be intense and fail), the movie feels z-grade. I could be being a bit harsh, I guess it was the letdown part of it that really got my goat. Still, this is not cheezy enough for most big schlock fans and too cheezy for those who like horror movies serious. It's just dull, overdone, and more irritating than anything else, really. I wouldn't recommend it at all unless you're REALLY bored and have a couple bucks to blow when you can't find something better that you haven't seen a million times.
