JR busts out of prison with Brendan Lynch, Australia's most notorious criminal, and joins Lynch's gang for a gold heist that soon pits the two men against one another.
Locked up for a minor crime, 19 year old JR quickly learns the harsh realities of prison life. Protection, if you can get it, is paramount. JR soon finds himself under the watchful eye of Australia's most notorious criminal, Brendan Lynch. But protection comes at a price. Lynch and his crew have plans for their young protegee. Upon release, JR must help secure Lynch's freedom, staging a daring prison break. As a reward, he's invited to join the crew as they plan a gold heist that promises to deliver millions. However, as things start to go wrong, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues. JR finds himself unsure of whom he can trust and on a collision course with his former mentor.
This film tell the story of a young man who is good at chess, getting accepted by a criminal gang inside the prison. They go out to do more jobs after breaking out of prison.
"Son of a Gun" has a big actor in it, and that's why I watched it. I found the plot meandering all the time, and the goals of the actors are poorly explained. I had no idea what the characters want to achieve when they do something, and I only find out after the effect has happened. That's poor story telling and poor engagement. I just didn't care for any of the characters. I found it disappointing and confusing. Fortunately the ending scenes were quite good, saving the film from being a complete disaster.
I wasn't really hyped for this movie and the only reason I wanted to see it was Ewan McGregor. I really like him, since Trainspotting to Star Wars, I think he is one of the greatest Scottish actors of all time alongside Sean Connery. So, I went to see it and it really surprised me. The film starts with the main character, JR - played ably by Brendan Thwaite - going into an Australian penitentiary. There he draws the attention of Brendan, one of the most famous criminal in the country. JR sees his cell companion committing suicide and then becomes the target of a inmates homosexual trio. Brendan protects JR and when he is out, the criminal wants his favour paid back. There's where the second act starts. "Son of a Gun" is a well shot film. Despite being an Australian indie film, it was given a lot of dedication and devotion into its making. Julius Avery makes his feature film debut with no illusions. He doesn't make this flick a mainstream one. He doesn't try to use the infamous shaky cam, allowing the action sequences to be fluid, well photographed and dynamic. The script is not the world's best but it has a final twist which gives the movie a sense of freshness. As it was mentioned above, Brendan Thwaites is competent, but the acting really shines with McGregor and Alicia Vikander who plays the love interest of JR, a bit of bad girl gone good type. McGregor is just flawless, mastering the Australian accent as he was a local. Alicia Vikander continues cementing her place in the movie industry, with the Sweden born actress becoming increasingly noticed after films like "Testament of Youth" and "Ex Machina". Besides, she also been casted in an important role of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E", the next Guy Richie film. They're both excellent in "Son of a Gun" making the most of it. The movie runs for 108 minutes, which doesn't turns it boring. It is very enjoyable and, most importantly, a film that reminds us what indie films producers and directors can do with very little. My expectations were surpassed and there's one thing I need to ask you, dear fellow reading this humble film review : go see "Son of Gun", go see "Ex Machina" and other indie films - you're just doing a a favour to yourself and a favour to the industry. SUPPORT THE INDIES!!!
Avery can't commit to whether he's making a gritty "Animal Kingdom"-style crime picture, or a light caper film, and the final result is wonky in the extreme, particularly in the conclusion, which feels particularly muddled.
