5 Jan 2011 My Mini had been rattling like a diesel and with the help of this forum I deduced it was the timing chain tensioner (1st Gen MCS). I followed the Haynes manual initially which advises removal of the rocker cover, insertion of the plunger in a compressed state, and use of a steel bar against the chain tensioner

See the associated tech articles for these procedures. Remove the right side engine mount and bracket. Support the engine from above or below. TIP: Screw plug 11317562528 is recommended to be replaced when doing the timing chain and tensioner replacement. To locate camshaft at TDC for MINI Cooper R55/R56/R57

This should help anyone who is having a noisy timing chain rattle (I know this is a very common issue with the Cooper S). So first of all So bought a tensioner from BMW directly for ?16 (bargain)! To complete this [IMG] [/IMG] Then remove the oil breather and air box and this gives you a lot more access.
Loosen it from the top, then replace it from the bottom. It may be noisy since the mini mechanic I know said to carefully move the tensioner itself to make the thing click open. (The new one is compressed) Small mention here. www.minicooperspeed.com/mini-ation-r50-r53/ If you have the valve cover
