Broadway gambler Gloves Donahue wants to find who killed the baker of his favorite cheesecake. He sees nightclub singer Leda Hamilton leaving the bakery. When her boss Marty's partner Joe is murdered, Leda and her accompanist Pepi disappear. It turns out that beneath all the mystery is a gang of Nazi operatives planning to blow up a battleship in New York harbor.
Runyonesque Broadway gamblers turn patriotic when they stumble onto a cell of Nazi saboteurs.
"All Through the Night" has Humphrey Bogart battling Nazis in a story that provides decent light entertainment as long as you do not take it too seriously. It's nothing like the great Bogarts, but it really doesn't pretend to be.
Bogart plays a New York gambler ("Gloves" Donahue) who has an organization filled with good-natured roughnecks that include the likes of Frank McHugh, William Demarest, Jackie Gleason, and Phil Silvers. They stumble across an organization of Nazi saboteurs led by a trio of delightful villains played by Conrad Veidt, Peter Lorre, and Judith Anderson.
The resulting plot developments are wildly implausible, and the dialogue sometimes silly, but it is all good fun as long as you weren't expecting "Casablanca" or "Key Largo". The Nazis often seem rather inept, but they do enough evil things to make sure that we root for Bogart and his gang.
This was something of an odd role for Bogart, and it would be interesting to know what audiences in 1942 thought about the way the Nazis were portrayed, but from a detached viewpoint decades later, "All Through The Night" is good light entertainment - just don't expect anything more, or you'll be disappointed.
What a great treat to, once again, see this movie and enjoy watching all of the wonderful character actors who added so much to our enjoyment throughout the 1930s and 1940s. They give Bogart a fine assist as he low keys it through this part comedy, part melodrama. The nazi menace is shown to be a formidable one but Bogie and his friends (and some of his enemies) join forces to fight the intruders.
