The memories of a 90 year old take the reader back to a world before, during and after WW2 .The author was born during the slump of the late 20s and then spent five years in war-torn London. He served his national service in the Merchant Navy, enduring a life that would surely not be tolerated in today's concern with health and safety.Fortunately he returned to London during what he regards as its golden days. He dwells at length on its cultural life in the 1950s, which he regards as the end of the classical age, before television, rock and roll and mobile screens took over people's lives. Despite the vicissitudes of his life he managed to achieve success as a journalist and magazine editor and eventually reached his true aim as an actor and stage director, working in weekly and other forms of repertory and on tour. The story ends on London's West End stage with triumph followed by disillusion. The author ends the story there,and an even more interesting and varied life, first as the editor of an important trade magazine, then as chief executive of international and national associations will have to wait for a sequel. . .
