A short-term memory loss patient sets out on his journey to avenge the death of his beloved girl.
Medical student, Sunita, is driven by curiosity to study the case of Sanjay Singhania, who is afflicted with short-term memory loss. She runs into him, befriends him, and finds out that he is out to kill a seemingly benevolent citizen, Ghajini Dharmatma. After warning the latter of the impending danger, she subsequently comes across a number of diaries written by Sanjay and attempts to put together a jigsaw puzzle as to how a successful and wealthy businessman became a crazed recluse, who re-lives his past through tattoos on his body, notes and Polaroid photographs on the wall of his Hiranandani Complex flat, and his sole obsession of carrying out his deadly mission - little knowing that Ghajini and his goons are out to erase every bit of evidence he has gathered and thus ensure that he ends up remembering nothing.
Recently, I had seen the reviews of Ghajini by Rajeev Masand on CNN-IBN where he told that Ghajini was a full fledged b-grade entertainment. I'd have to agree with him on the fact that Ghajini looks and feels completely B-grade. Yet, it manages to succeed in bringing life to the story and its characters. Its not a copy of Memento completely; in fact, I do not think that it would have succeeded if it was a copy of Memento as it would have been disliked by the audience for its plot. The director tweaked the plot a bit so that it would be indianized.
Ghajini has really good performances by the lead pair, Aamir and Asin. Asin, in fact is really funny and deserves the accolades and awards that she is getting. Aamir has worked on his body a lot ( His body transformation keeps coming of Tatasky) I think that he should have been at least nominated for best actor even though Hrithik deserves the award.
The bad performance comes from Jiah Khan, who doesn't seem to dominate her scenes and can be forgotten easily. The villain too was okay.
What the film lacks in is the special effects. The action scenes are hilarious as Aamir bashes one even before you realize that that he has bashed five before. They are poorly shot and typical South Indian type.
The film is not violent at all. I've seen many other movies that are brutal compared to this. There are many loopholes in the movie that are glaring and clearly noticeable. The pace of second half of the film slows down and gets a bit boring towards the end. Also the script could have improved a bit. The songs were good but forgettable, except for probably Guzarish. Also, the song, Lattu seems completely out of place.
Overall, a really good film which is flawed in some ways. 7 out of 10.
I'd wanted to see this film for ages --not least because Aamir Khan is sex-on-legs but also because I liked Memento a great deal and wondered what Bollywood would do with it. And in the event...?
Well Aamir is gorgeous, as is the art direction. The songs are class. And the flashbacks to the love story are without doubt the best bits...nobody conveys falling in love quite as deliciously as Aamir does...
But the present day Memento bits? Largely an excuse for cartoon violence and it didn't work for me.
I found the two female co-stars both lacking --especially the medical student. Too glamorous and too wooden. Sorry, love, but you need to find a different career, me thinks.
Overall, it wasn't great but it was interesting and worth a watch.
But what is it with all the critics on here that go on about the plot-holes? It's Bollywood not The Discovery Channel! Since when was Bollywood anything more than escapist nonsense. I mean, get real!! Enjoy it for what it is not for what it is not.
