In 1939, an intrepid reporter in New York City makes a connection between the story she's covering -- of famous scientists suddenly disappearing around the world, and a recent attack on the city by giant robots. Determined to find the solution to these happenings, she seeks the help of her ex-boyfriend, the captain of a mercenary legion of pilots. The two are investigating the case when the robots attack the city again, though in a stroke of luck, Sky Captain's right-hand man is able to locate their source. They then set off on an adventure in search of the evil mastermind behind these schemes, who is bent on creating a utopia and destroying the current world.
The lives of reporter Polly Perkins and her ex-boyfriend, Joe Sullivan, intersect. For the past three years, large robots have been roaming the Earth, taking what they need, and vanishing as quickly as they appeared. Joe and his technical assistant Dex have been investigating and battling these mysterious robots. Meanwhile, many of the world's scientists have been systematically kidnapped. Dr. Jennings, believing that he is the next target, tells what little he knows to Polly. His beliefs are that Dr. Totenkopf, who has not been heard from in over thirty years, is carrying out a project he started prior to World War I, this project which may be associated with these robots. Polly and Joe, with Dex, join forces to find Totenkopf, which may not be easy due to their still antagonistic relationship. As they piece together Totenkopf's plot, Polly and Joe realize that stopping him from carrying out his grand plan of creating his version of a Utopian society may not be as easy as killing him.
Forget the fact it's unbelievably campy...I attend movies to be entertained, not to nit pick them to death with idiot comments about authenticity or other crap...Star Wars didn't get picked apart.
I loved it. I fully intend to buy the DVD when released. I wouldn't bother with the demo online game offered on the "offical" website, however.
I also love art deco, which probably accounts for much of my positive attitude towards this film.
If you haven't seen it, do so...despite it's rating, it's not a bad film for kids.
I totally loved the idea of this movie, a comic book old time Boy's Own adventure story brought to life. Jude Law's character reminded me of old British boyhood adventure stories like Biggles or Raffles - characters that he should definitely take a crack at in the future.
Yeah the use of Laurence Olivier in this movie does set a dangerous precedent. And this is obviously NOT appealing to those nose-sniffing pretentious viewers who expect every film to have some "deep and meaningful" philosophical discourse, like a frigging wailing English Literature essay. But for those of us who enjoy good solid creative entertainment with flair and imagination, this does work at least ninety-five percent.
The flying platforms are totally cool. I understand they are based on ones used in previous stories, but that just makes me want to see those stories as well. Some of the ideas don't stack up too well, like the magical airplane that turns into a submersible and can repair itself automatically. And some shots don't match up perfectly. But it's still a cool feel and a great storyline.
My biggest complaint with this movie is that the lighting was very dark for most of the picture; I was squinting for the first two thirds. I feel a bit hypocritical since I've often complained of CG movies being unrealistically bright and cutesy; but this went to the opposite extreme. I hope the image improves on DVD, which is direct light of course.
Summing up, a great cinematic experience though not quite Top 100 material - and definitely the movie I want to give to my Dad for his birthday or Xmas this year!
The film's save-the-world scenario may be the stuff of crusty cliff-hangers, its imagery may be borrowed, and its jaunty dialogue anything but deep, but there's something exhilarating going on here. It's darn sublime.
The two vials contained the material for Totenkopf's genetically engineered humans, his Adam and Eve. "Sky Captain" is Joe's call-sign, or pilot nickname. The story behind it remains unknown. a5c7b9f00b
