Book descriptionYou get the feeling, while reading his essays in Deadwood: Stories of the Black Hills, that David Milch is a very self-obsessed sort of guy. Theres something a little masturbatory about explaining the symbolic meaning, the construction of character, and the purpose of language in a show if youre the sole creator of those things. However, I get the feeling that if someone else had written a book interpreting Deadwood, Milch just wouldve corrected him anyway. So perhaps its best that he just takes up this task himself. The title is a bit of a misnomer; very little space is given to the stories of Deadwood, only a few short sections, many of which are excerpts from other books. But if youre looking for some insight into the process of creating one of the best television shows in history, this book is a fantastic place to start. Its more like a piece of literary analysis written by the author of what is being analyzed; the special features on the DVDs function in much the same way.Milch writes in a voice that is somehow brilliant and condescending and vulgar and approachable at the same time. His language is a little elliptical, but not nearly as much as the dialogue in the show. Hes very much steeped in old literature, literature about Big Themes, and he is able to explain these themes to the audience fairly well. Hes a better doer than explainer, however, and interpreting the show is a thousand more times enjoyable than reading Milch pontificate about it.My favorite section was Milchs essay on gold (in the parlance of Hearst, the color). The idea that gold serves as a unifying, symbolic force in Deadwood is a fascinating one. Deadwood would, of course, not be there without the gold. At the same time, Deadwood (and people like Al or Cy) help to interpret that symbol into gambling, booze, or sex. It allows a mining camp become a civilization; the gold is meaningless to the miners without Al, without Deadwood, there to interpret it for them. Hearst is someone who is defined only by that symbol, and that makes him inhuman. He is unknowable because he doesnt seem to care what the symbol can do for him - his only motivation is acquisition. Its scary to think that men like him are the ones who had the most power in shaping this country. Its a beautiful printing, it should be noted, with lots of wonderful color pictures and a few memorable excerpts from the show.
