Rayford Steele is an airline pilot whose relationship with his wife has gone sour;he ponders having an affair with an attractive flight attendant, Hattie Durham. In the midst of a flight to London, a number of their passengers mysteriously disappear, and chaos takes hold as a number of vehicles on the ground and in the air are suddenly unmanned. Meanwhile, Buck Williams, a television journalist, is pondering the rash of sudden disappearances as he works on a report about Dr. Chaim Rosenzweig, an Israeli scientist who has devised a formula that would make any soil on earth easy to cultivate. However, Buck wonders if there's more to Rosenzweig than he first imagined when he discovers the doctor is in cahoots with two multi-millionaires who plan to broker the invention to promote their own agenda of international domination.
The Biblical prophecy of Armegeddon begins when the Rapture instantly takes all believers in Christ from the Earth. A reporter left behind learns that the Anti-Christ will soon take power.
I'm glad that many Christians have written comments and not just atheists panning the poor movie. But yeah, as a Christian, I can say that this is a bad movie, if you see it without reading the books.
The series created by LaHaye and Jenkins is great. It's gripping, and although there are now thirteen novels and three prequels, you just can't get enough. Mainly, the most symbolic novel is the first, in which the series takes its name. So, it was almost obvious someone was going to make a film adaptation. The problem: Christians decided to make it like all the other ones they've made. That means low budget, amateur writing and acting and generic directing.
So, if you have already read the novel, you might not see it too bad, as you have a good expectation, but it's still bad. I mean, it doesn't even live up to the novel in which it's based.
For instance, the casting had little to no effort. Rayford was supposed to be blonde and with slightly gray hair, Chloe was supposed to be younger and Bruce Barnes was supposed to be white (no racist commentary intended, seriously).
Then there's the dialog. Apparently, Christian film-making has been doomed to sound like a bad after school TV special all the time. So yeah, you should include the evangelical message, but at least you could have it hidden a little, so you don't scare half of the audience away.
Another trademark for Christian movies is a pop rock soundtrack. The score was almost inexistent. (actually, I liked Chance Thomas' score for the video game much better) And, sorry to say this, but I'm sick of the almost obligatory pop song playing on an emotional scene, like Buck's conversion. It's just too cheesy.
Unfortunately, the novel had so ambitious ideas, that it couldn't be made into a movie by Christian producers without taking risks or setting a higher budget.
There were good aspects, don't worry. Cameron's acting was good, but the best one was the guy playing Carpathia. The best scene was the one in the united nations conference room (even better than in the novel, I have to confess), although it can leave you a little bit disturbed. However, the settings sucked. It doesn't even look like a conference room were world leaders get together.
All in all, the movie only works when you read the base material. And trust me, the books are far more better. Actually, almost nothing based on the series is better than it.
The film was great but everyone should read the books first! The books are even greater!!! So buy the books and than rent the film.. You will be thrilled for hours and hours and its really worth the afford!
As a christian I can approve the story and show it to all your unsaved friends.
A blundering cringefest, thanks to unintentionally laughable dialogue, hackneyed writing and uninspired direction.
