A posse of crooked cops, malevolent gangsters and a horde of walking dead are the centre point of this gruesome, tight, action packed, claustrophobic tale of retribution and escape. Penned like animals, on the top floor of a deserted high-rise block, these two opposing gangs find that they are not alone in the lair of bloodthirsty corridors of death. Joining forces to survive, they must reach ground level together or perish. Loaded with a bad ass attitude, guns, axes and extremely creative hand-to-hand combat sequences that project the fears and paranoia that are the fighting forces behind the need to survive, when caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time.
When detective Mathias Rivoallan is found murdered by the gang led by the Nigerian Markudi, detectives Jimenez, Aurore, Ouessem and Tony decide to revenge the death of his friend. The vigilantes plot bloodshed, executing Markudi, his brother Bola (Doudou Masta) and the other gangsters in the abandoned building where they are gathered. However, things go wrong when the watchman arrives and the violent gang subdues the quartet and tortures them. Meanwhile, the lookouts of the gang hear explosions, sirens and the weird sound of the rabble.
Cops going to get revenge for the death of one of their brothers only to have the raid go horribly wrong. Then things get even worse when the dead come back to life and the zombies attack.
Bloody straight forward action film about trying to get away from the dead and get out of the high rise they are trapped in is for the most part a roller coaster ride into darkness. The effects are good, the plot serviceable and the performances engaging. Its the sort of film that just carries you along for a good chunk of its running time.
The trouble is that films insistence not to explain anything begins to take its toll in the later part of the film when you realize that they haven't explained a couple of key points which are left hanging and seem more like lapses in internal logic or laziness on the filmmakers part(like why the zombies come to that building). Sure the characters may not have known the answers to some of the questions but at the same time there are too many unanswered to be satisfying, especially when the film ends with a really big question.
For gore hounds this is a must since they'll eat it up. For other horror lovers its worth a look since they'll like the things the film gets right.
There is always an argument among zombie purists. Should the walk slow as in most zombie films, or can they run? This is the running type, so the purists may be disappointed.
Yes, there was blood and gore - plenty of it. No self-respecting zombie movie can exist without it, just as no self-respecting vampire movie would eschew blood for glitter.
It was non-stop action from start to finish. As you would expect in real life, it was loud, very loud. These people were literally screaming for their lives.
The ending was predicable, but effective nonetheless. Just could not take my eyes off Claude Perron (Amélie) throughout the film. She did a superb job, as did Eriq Ebouaney (Lumumba, Hit-man, Transporter 3).
This zombie flick has only been released in a cut version in France, neither the DVD nor the Blu-ray contain the Uncut Version. Right at the beginning three long scenes featuring the character of Jimenez were left out: two on the cemetery and the following one in the alley showing Jimenez beating up a guy. There's no real explanation for deleting this scenes but they can be seen in the bonus material of the French DVD/BD. 646f9e108c
