Set against the backdrop of 1977 Los Angeles, The Nice Guys opens when single father and licensed PI Holland March (Gosling) is hired to investigate the apparent suicide of famous porn star Misty Mountains. As the trail leads him to track down a girl named Amelia (Qualley), he encounters less licensed and less hands-off private eye Jackson Healey (Russell Crowe) and his brass knuckles, both hired by the young hippie. However, the situation takes a turn for the worse when Amelia vanishes and it becomes apparent that March wasn't the only party interested. As both men are forced to team up, they'll have to take on a world filled with eccentric goons, strippers dressed as mermaids and even a possible government conspiracy.
Los Angeles, 1978. Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) is a private investigator, of sorts. He is the man you call when someone needs to be given a message, violently. Holland March (Ryan Gosling) is more legit, and conventional, taking cases involving tracking down missing persons and the like. Their paths cross when porn star Misty Mountains dies in a car crash. Misty's aunt hires March after she believes that Misty is still alive. Their investigations lead them to a young woman named Amelia, and a massive conspiracy plot.

"The Nice Guys" (2016) is sometimes hilariously funny, sometimes to much focused on unnecessary things, but always entertaining. Script by Shane Black was good, not original, but good for what it is. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling have great chemistry together and interaction between these two really work. Action scenes were good and almost always darkly funny - very funny actually. Now there are some unfocused plot elements that prevented me to giving this truly entertaining movie higher score, nevertheless if you like "Lethal Weapon" series, you should definitely watch "The Nice Guys".
Overall, "The Nice Guys" is good, fun entertainment. Seeing Kim Basinger and Russell Crowe together again on screen (even for a short time) since classical "L.A. Confidential" was very pleasant - they have some great chemistry together on screen which is simply hard to explain. Still, not everything worked in "The Nice Guys" superbly well, nevertheless this is a fun entertainment with far more positive then negative.
1. My wife and I would have left after 10 minutes, had we not driven the other couple, who may never get to choose another movie for us to see, again.
2. It wasn't worth the $12 (senior) price of admission.
3. I hate movies where 2 buffoons cannot be hit by automatic weapons fire, yet the same gunman can take out the people who (to their own benefit) are written out of the script with one bullet.
4. Ryan Gossling is a bad drunk, whose 13 year old daughter chauffeurs him around LA in a vintage Mercedes convertible, and talks about rim jobs. He survives more multistory falls than he deserves. He has the 9 lives of Bond, without any of the character needed, or warranted to preserve his life.
5. How the hell did Russell Crowe take this part? He must be at the tale end of his career. How much weight did he gain to play this awful role.
6. Way too much violence, and while the humor was good, I marveled at what kind of drugs the adults in front of us were on. Even the most moronic lines were hysterical to them.
7. The daughter, cute Cybil Sheppard like looks for this 13 year old, watching pornos with the star of the porn flick? Is this what Hollywood has deteriorated to? The theater, a 16 plex, on a Saturday night at 7 was dead. Maybe that's because there's nothing good coming out of Hollywood.
8. The premise, which is finally revealed about 75% of the way through the movie, why Amelia was being sought, was intended for naïve supplicants of Kardashian voyeurism. So thin, as to not be credible to anyone with even a micro cephalic brain. No wonder the rest of the world is scratching their heads, looking at what being President of this formerly great nation has deteriorated to.
9. Apart from the gratuitous violence, there is also gratuitous destruction of many late 70's era vehicles. Gossling and Crowe had a choice, these cars didn't. ATTENTION -- Classic car owners: Don't sell your cars to studios without reading the script too! It must have hurt to see these formerly well-cared for vehicles destroyed with a few key strokes from the screenwriter.
10. I can't think of anything for #10, therefore the movie gets a one * from me (but I don't think that you can give zero stars – 'cause I would have if I could have). I don't write reviews often, and I am not bulemic. Nice Guys has left me with a very bad taste in my mouth, that I can't get rid of, and so felt compelled to try to stick some fingers down my throat (literally), by typing this.
If you need a really good laugh, rent Animal House, or American Pie. Watch some old episodes of MASH, or Frasier, or Friends, or Cheers, or Big Bang, but don't waste your time on this flick.
The Nice Guys harks back to the 70s golden age of revisionist detective thrillers, but the result feels too knowingly déja vu, rather than bringing a truly fresh angle.
