This is an attempt to tell the story of British music. Wide and comprehensive as the scope of Eni Iish literature undoubtedly is, we have hitherto been without a book dealing specifically with the rise and growth of English music. Histories of music almost rival the planets in number, but they are for the most part singularly unlike the heavenly bodies in the light they throw upon that aspect of the divine art which every Briton would naturally desire information upon namely, the history of the music of his own country. I know of no work which deals at all adequately with the rise and progress of the art as found and practised in England, the nearest attempt at anything of the kind being the late Sir Frederick A. Gore Ouseley sbrief, and necessary, additions to Naumann s History of Music Yet the subject of England smusic deserves ample treatment.
