Under the leadership of underworld Don Aslam Bhai (Madan Joshi) flourishes a criminal empire in Bombay. His close associates are Mallik (Ajay Devgan) and Chandrakant alias Chandu (Vivek Oberoi). Awaiting the right opportunity, Mallik and Chandu take over from Aslam, and become the two heads of his criminal empire. Times change, and the two also decide to change with the times, and legitimize their empire to a very large extent and call it "Company". Differences arise between easy-going & emotional Chandu and the technical & matter of fact Mallik. A lot of missundersatandings develop between once very good friends, Chandu loses ground and face. He decides to take matters in his own hand & set things right. He breaks away from the gang, and as a result a war results between those loyal to him on one side, and those loyal to Mallik, on the other. Mallik's forces prove to be stronger, Chandu must decide if he compromise with Mallik or go on the right path.
Mallik is a henchman of Aslam Bhai, a Mumbai underworld kingpin. He inducts local hothead Chandu into the gang, and the two of them soon form a formidable faction within the gang, eventually displacing Aslam. As the empire grows, however, the two of them start drifting apart.
Company is a film about a youngster Chandu who is a small time crook but has a lot of potential. The fellow he starts working for, Malik Bhai, runs a very powerful crime syndicate called Company in the Mumbai underworld. Malik recruits Chandu to help run a majority of his operations but a misunderstanding happens between them that erupts into an all out war. The result of this war is the destruction of their 'Company' organisation. Principal strengths of characters, rated on physical power, intelligence and influence:
Malik Bhai: 5 physical power, 9 intelligence, 9 influence. Chandu: 9 physical power, 8 intelligence, 6 influence.
You can see that both are quite evenly matched overall. This is why Company is such a good film! The music is very good and the only bad part is sometimes the sequences will suddenly cut to a different sequence that is supposed to come on a few seconds later. It's an editing style which makes one giddy. Company is an excellent movie overall!
First I would like to add that I am not very much fond of the crop of Bollywood movies. They are convoluted and hackneyed story lines with excruciatingly long dance numbers but I stumbled upon this film, "Company". At first thought, I realized the parallels to Scorsese's "Goodfellas" but once the story digresses it is more than that. There are clear influences of the great mobster films of Coppola and others but the story in the way it is told is quite refreshing for Bollywood standards. We see the rise of this slum dweller Chandu, who meets upon this respected underworld leader, Malik, and slowly progresses up to the top of the hierarchy. Ram Gopal Varma is a very effective director. He displays very bizarre camera angles through exquisite cinematography. The editing is sharp and quick with the running time flying by. The only criticism is the song sequence in the beginning and the dance club number. Totally pointless. With the recent influx of Chinese films being displayed in America such as "Hero" and "Shaolin Soccer", I hope someone like Tarantino brings a film like this to a larger audience because not doing so would do it an incredible injustice. What more can one say,It's "Company".
