If you hated KICK ASS, if you find superheroes are ridiculous even on a conceptual level and, most of all, if you dislike extreme violence, move along, skip the movie. If you are 'geek' enough, it is actually quite fun. Ludicrous enough in its treatment of the subject matter, "SUPER" is good for more than a few chuckles and laughs. The movie is also served by a surprisingly strong cast for this type of 'indie' movie, and the Ellen Page character, and her interpretation, are the high point of the movie. Super is also short enough to not take itself seriously - I would recommend it - it's a good way to spend 90mn. This is one of the darkest comedies I've ever seen, way darker than anything I've seen by Tarantino ("Pulp Fiction"), way darker than anything I've seen by the Coen Brothers ("Fargo"), and it makes "Dr. Strangelove" look like Mary Poppins. If you're paying attention, "SUPER" will violate your mind where the sun don't shine. You've heard of an "antihero", a protagonist who lacks the traditional heroic qualities like nobility, selflessness, morality and all that Superman stuff, right? Maybe you're thinking of someone like "Dexter" (a serial killer) or Gordon Gekko (Wall Street scoundrel) or my favorite, Eric Draven (the mildly-psychotic vigilante killer in "The Crow"). The thing about these antiheroes is that, while they boldly cross into shocking & misanthropic behavior, they still represent a sort of justice, twisted as it may be. Or in other dark comedies like "Pulp Fiction" or "Heathers", we immediately understand that the protagonists are doing wicked things but we accept it and cheer them on anyway. Again, in both cases there is no threat to our comfortable sense of right & wrong. Well, here in "SUPER" you can kiss that comfort goodbye. The protagonist (played by Rainn Wilson), while being a totally lovable, nerdy guy with seemingly the best intentions, is actually just a disturbed individual with no consistent grasp of right, wrong or any sort of fairness. It's evident immediately in a sort of cute way, but it becomes stronger and more disturbing like an ugly cancer as the film deepens. Just like these deceptively sweet characters, the film itself begins as a light-hearted comedy but gradually takes us into one of the grittiest stories you can imagine. For real, "Platoon" would lighten the mood after this film.

Of course, all of this was deliberate on the part of writer/director James Gunn. He set out to create an acidic, sarcastic, satirical farce that would challenge your sense of right & wrong to the core. And at least with me he was totally successful. I laughed, was thrilled, was entertained and was sickened to my stomach by the time the movie was over. In the end I have to call "SUPER" a masterpiece simply because it hits a nerve that few other films have ever been able to hit.

I would NOT recommend this film to anyone just looking for laughs, nor would I recommend it to someone who's looking for an entertaining action romp. But if you enjoy being challenged by morally confounding puzzles, films where the director purposely swaps good & evil to see if you notice the difference (such as in the original "Aeon Flux" animations, or the scifi war satire "Starship Troopers") then definitely check this one out.
This depraved charmer offers enough to admire and a specialized hipster crowd will enjoy it, if to a mutedly positive effect.
