One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public's adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, The Four Horsemen resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is none other than Walter Mabry, a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Follow the Four Horsemen in another crazy adventure as they take to the streets of Macau to pull off the craziest stunt yet in order to expose a new threat that tried to end them for good. I saw "Now You See Me 2", starring Jesse Eisenberg-Batman v Superman:Dawn of Justice, Zombieland; Mark Ruffalo-The Hulk in the Avengers movies, Windtalkers; Woody Harrelson-The Hunger Games movies, Zombieland; Dave Franco-The Neighbors movies, Warm Bodies; Lizzy Caplin- Masters of Sex_tv, 127 Hours and Daniel Radcliffe-Trainwreck, The Woman in Black.
This is a sequel to the 2013 surprise hit. Seems like whenever a movie makes money nowadays, they will make a sequel-it's easier than coming up with original ideas, plus people like the familiar. Anyway, the Four Horsemen return with one substitution, Lizzy for Isla Fisher-I think I heard that Isla was pregnant and could not make it. Plot wise; Jesse, Mark, Woody and Dave have been in hiding, since the last movie, and are drawn out by a wealthy, want-a-be magician, Daniel. Daniel wants them to pull off a heist and threatens them if they refuse. There are the elaborate tricks, misdirection and smoke & mirrors magical spectacles that made the first movie popular and there is even an evil twin of one of the characters thrown in the mix-he plays both parts. FYI: I also heard that they are already talking about a third sequel. If you liked the first one then you should enjoy this one, too. It's rated "PG-13" for violence and language and has a running time of 2 hours & 9 minutes. I liked the first one and I would probably buy this one on DVD.
The first one was excellent--this one is cheesy, but it still holds your attention. As an example, when they're taking the "chip" out of the computer room and tossing it around on the back of a playing card like it's a frisbee from one to the other, you'll notice that everybody gets searched like a dozen times. Yeah, it's fancy camera work, but it makes no sense. After the guards search the first person, pass the damned thing to him/her and be done with it. The scene went on for 15 minutes and then ended with Woody Harrelson almost miss catching the card in his hat of all things. I don't know how they got these actors to sign on for the second installment, honestly. And is it just me or does Jesse Eisenberg play a great prick because he's really a prick and it's not acting? Really--I'm getting tired of seeing him play pricks in every movie he's in. If that's just him, then it's not acting.
Jon M. Chu (several Step Up movies) has taken over directing duties from Louis Leterrier, and he has a lighter, goofier touch. He seems to get that the silliness is baked in.
