In 208 A.D., in the Han Dinasty of China, the tyrannic and greedy Prime Minster Cao Cao forces the reluctant Emperor Han to declare war against the kingdoms of Liu Bei and Sun Quan in the South of China. Cao Cao heads with a mighty army of one million soldiers and attacks Liu Bei. His advisor and war strategist Zhuge Liang heads to South in a diplomatic mission trying to convince Sun Quan to join force with Liu Bei against the powerful warlord. When Zhuge Liang meets the viceroy Zhou Yu, he succeeds in his assignment with the alliance of the two kingdoms against Cao Cao. The armies fight against each other in many battles until the final one in Red Cliff where guile, knowledge and strategy prevail.
The first chapter of a two-part story centered on a battle fought in China's Three Kingdoms period (220-280 A.D.).
For some reason, no easter film nowadays seems to escape the wuxia curse - whenever there is any sort of action, it needs to be over-the-top unrealistic action because of REASONS.
Anyway, Chi Bi (Red Cliff, a film adaptation of the civil war of the Three Kingdoms period) is a pseudo historical film where there is much wuxia fighting while apparently something else also goes on.
The film is three hours long. It's boring. it's slow. It's excessively melodramatic. The acting is always forced, there is no attempt at historical accuracy, so unless you are in the market for a three hour all you can eat of kung fu fights, why would you watch this film.
Red Cliff isn't terrible, i suppose if you wanted some asian action, this film will do it for you. What it doesn't do, is have a sense of pacing with said action. Say, like The Matrix had. The story is very vague and serves more as a framing device for the good guys to beat up the bad guy, and hardly every moves forward. Combat is laughably unrealistic and without a set of rules laid beforehard, such as, say, THE MATRIX had. So you're just watching three hours of guys on strings shattering spears with their bare hands.
Honestly, i'm done with this garbage. I'm not 14yo anymore. I was hoping the asian cinema was ready to come of age, but since the magnificent Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, it seems they have taken more steps back than steps forward.
It's bad. I mean, it's not HORRIBLE, but i wouldn't recommend it.
5.5/10
For all those who claim that the movie is "historically inaccurate" you would be correct. However, to say that the ROTK novel is accurate would be a mistake. Go back and read the actual records by Chen Shou. The novel written by Luo Guanzhong is highly fabricated. For one, Zhou Yu was the chief commander of the allied forces. Secondly, Zhuge Liang played no role in the actual battle; his contribution came from persuading Sun Quan to fight Cao Cao. Thirdly, Zhou Yu was not a little man. He was, by all historical accounts, a generous and benevolent individual. Finally, Liu Bei's forces did very little in the battle. Sun Quan's forces did most of the fighting. Neither side had even close to the troops as mentioned in the novel. Cao Cao probably had close to 100,000 instead of the fabricated million in ROTK. Learn your history before commenting, please.
Camp, over-the-top and entirely unbelievable: in short, the best thing John Woo has made in years.
Due to the Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act 1937 scenes containing violence to animals have to be cut in the UK. Therefore both versions, the international cut and the original cut - both available on DVD in the UK - were censored accordingly. You can find a comparison between the cut international version (UK) and the uncut international version here. and a comparison between the cut original version (UK) and the uncut original version here. In order to make the whole project much more attractive for international audiences, an International Version was created, that features both Red Cliff movies cut into one movie. Producer Terence Chang said the following: "We wanted to make a Hollywood blockbuster in Chinese that would appeal to non-Asian audiences as well. We worked very hard to create a version of the film that maintains the integrity of the action and character development of the story, while excising some of the cultural details that could be considered unnecessary for Western audiences not intimately familiar with the historical mythology." a5c7b9f00b
