When a Yakuza boss named Anjo disappears with 300 million yen, his chief henchman, a sadomasochistic man named Kakihara, and the rest of his mob goons go looking for him. After capturing and torturing a rival Yakuza member looking for answers, they soon realize they have the wrong man and begin looking for the man named Jijii who tipped them off in the first place. Soon enough Kakihara and his men encounter Ichi, a psychotic, sexually-repressed young man with amazing martial arts abilities and blades that come out of his shoes. One by one Ichi takes out members of the Yakuza and all the while Kakihara intensifies his pursuit of Ichi and Ichi's controller Jijii. What will happen as the final showdown happens between the tortured and ultra-violent Ichi and the pain-craving Kakihara?
Yakuza boss Anjo disappears with three hundred million yen. His loyal gang members, lead by the masochist Kakihara, start a search, but their aggressive and gory methods worry the other yakuza gangs. Kakiharas most frightening counterpart is the mysterious Ichi, a psychopathic killer with a dark childhood secret, who is controlled by a retired cop.
It's easy to over-react to Ichi, but you have to remember that this is live action manga, with all the violence which that entails. Or entrails. It's also easy to say that the extreme violence, of which there is a LOT, is so over the top that it becomes almost humourous, but it's true. This is not a film that's going to keep you awake at night through fear because, quite simply, the "horror" is so unbelievable that it just ends up washing over you unless you're the kind of person who believes a deranged killer could break into your house and slice you in two with oversized ice skates.
The real star of the show is the "villain" (assuming you can categorise any of the characters into good or bad), Kakihara. While Ichi causes more deaths, it's Kakihara that runs riot with inventive ways to kill bystanders or mutilate himself. A great bad guy because there's no doubting that he IS bad. Through and through.
This is definitely not a film for the whole family to watch after Christmas dinner, but if you're a fan of manga, or Japanese films in general, it's well worth seeking out to see what's happening on the, literally, bleeding edge of Asian films.
What a great film......that's all I had to say after watching this. Sure, there was alot of blood and guts, but in the end that wasn't what was on my mind. I remembered Tadanobu Asano's brilliant performance, Takashi Miike's excellent direction, Shinya Tsukamoto's energetic cameo. Yep, this was one hell of a film alright! The start will get your heart pumping. The music will get your head nodding. The ending will leave you wanting more! Any way you can, get this film!
P.S I was lying about not remembering the blood and guts! That stuff will stay on my mind for a very loooooong time!
One of Miike's most violent and sadistic movies, filled with squirting blood, throat-slashing, limb-hacking and other forms of mutilation too gruesome to describe here.
Several scenes containing violence against women had to be cut for the British release. In the US, the film was released in a R-Rated version, which was cut by 11 minutes, as well as in an uncut unrated version. The R-Rated has been cut by roughly the same amount of time as the German version. Unlike the German version, however, they did not cut whole sections of the movie in the R-Rated. More scenes with sexual content are missing, though. For example, the film title, forming from a pool of sperm, was removed completely.
In HongKong the movie was released in a cut version only even though it received the highest rating: CAT III. Nearly 17 minutes were cut for this version. a5c7b9f00b
