Young couple Carla (Maestro) and Martin (Leroux) are abducted by three men and spend a terrifying night in Caracas as they wait for Carla's father (Blades) to hand over the ransom.
In a night pregnant with a strange mix of tension and dizzy abandon, lovers Carla and Martin prowl clubs before drunkenly wandering back to his car. While he comes across as crass nouveau riche, she appears more liberal. Their conspicuous affluence, however, makes them ideal targets for kidnappers, and the trio of Trece, Budu and Niga gets a bead on them and promptly sweeps them up at gunpoint. The kidnappers then demand $20,000 to be delivered in two hours. Carla phones her rich father Sergio to procure the money, but chaos soon ensues. A botched ATM robbery is followed by a stopover at the palatial estate of a gay drug dealer.
I think that this is one of the best Venezuelan movies that I ever saw. It's different...
Jakubowicz's work is terrific... This movie have all that you want to watch in a movie: is exciting, funny, fast (you don't have to much time to stop and think about and compare it from some that you read on the newspaper...), have some strange romance and charisma from one of the kidnappers (DJ Trece),... the acting is GGGRRREEEAAATTT ! It's a sad Latin American reality... but.. you have to go to the cinema and watch it... if you understand Spanish.. you'll enjoy it A LOT.. (I can't imagine to watch this movie in English or with subtitles....) Great movie... I feel great to be Venezuelan... just like the director... I predicted a lot of awards.. deserves it..
First there is a view of the city of Caracas as it is usually not shown. The shantytowns that border some of the nicest parts of the metropolis is prominently displayed. The contrast is obvious. We are introduced to the main characters that participate in the drama. At the center of the story are Carla and Martin, a well heeled young couple that will be marrying soon. A stop at a drug store in the wrong part of town sets the kidnap in motion, when four criminals notice their fancy car that is obviously a giveaway.
Once the criminals force the couple into their car, it becomes clear their intentions. They are part of a growing industry of easy made money by focusing on people like Carla and Martin. They look as though they come from money, therefore an easy prey to get a huge ransom for them. A call to the parents of the victims follow as the demand is set. It is a huge amount, but the bandits figure they will get it. What follows is an incredible run through Caracas. We witness corrupt police who extort drugs from the men in order to let them go on their way.
This is a gritty film done in digital video format. The grainy photography adds a layer of texture to the picture. Directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz, from Venezuela, his movie focuses on a deadly reality of the country, as well of some Latin America countries where kidnapping is serious business for a criminal element that knows the ropes as to what to do. Most of these men get away with their crimes because they are probably in cahoots with the corrupt police that are supposed to be in the business to better their meager incomes. Kidnapping is a lucrative business, after all.
Assuming the victims' point of view in the type of kidnapping that's now epidemic in Latin America, Jonathan Jakubowicz's Kidnap Express depicts a nocturnal Caracas with tense energy.
