Six children genetically cross-bred with avian DNA, complete with wings, take flight around the country to discover their origins.
There are 6 children that aren't your average kids. Their names are Max (14 years old), Fang (14), Iggy (14), Nudge (11), Gazzy (8), and Angel (6). They're special hybrid humans; they had 2% avian DNA infused to their human DNA. They escaped from a lab they call "The School" with the help of their caretaker (Jeb Batchleder), and they've been living in the mountains since, even after Jeb dies. But when the half-lupine guards from The School, Erasers, have taken Angel, they go on a exhilarating journey to get her back. Along the way, their mysterious past is being revealed, as well as some stunning secrets.
This movie is not bad but it also doesn't class as good movie, its an okay movie. The films production is a bit of a mess but good for that looks like a relatively low budget. But something maximum ride needed was a more experienced and possibly better know actress for the lead and this is not just the leads problem but the younger cast in general. A lot of the acting felt forced and it was a shame because most of the young cast show potential but just needed more experience before taking on something that could be big. The movies director has a lot of potential but I wish this is something he had waited to do later on as i think he needs more experience before taking on a fantasy series of this size. I think this lies in the films problem that there was not enough experience for this movie to be made and not enough money to get this film made right. It's a shame because this could have truly been great.
If you have any emotional attachment to the Maximum Ride novels, I strongly advise you NOT to watch the movie. It is straight up the cringiest thing I've ever seen and it very well may ruin the entire series for you. When the kids are flying it looks like they were just laying on a table with a green screen behind them. Not only was the CGI horrible, but the casting was also a bust. First of all, Fang is supposed to be a cringey emo edgelord, but they cast some Abercrombie frat boy to play the part. And I'm pretty sure Max was supposed to be half latina (her mom is Dr. Martinez, who was described with darker features), but they cast the literal whitest actress to play her. Max was supposed to at least have brown hair, but I could have forgiven her casting if Fang's hadn't been so horrible. The only redeeming quality is that they correctly cast a black actress to portray Nudge, and all the minor characters were decent. Lastly, the plot is just a huge mess. I watched it with my mom who had never read the books and she had no idea what was going on. If you're the type of person who watches cringe compilations then this is the movie for you.
