In war-torn Japan, the Tokugawa Shogun, desperate to restore peace to his people, orders the assassination of the hostile warlords. A beautiful young woman is raised from birth with nine other orphans, to become an assassin. Her name is AZUMI, the ultimate assassin.
In Japan in times of war among clans, the master samurai Gessai raises ten orphans in the mountains, one of them the girl Azumi, and they become experts in martial arts. When they are teenagers, the master assigns them to a mortal test, and then the five survivors travel with him with the mission of killing three evil warlords of clans and keeping their nation united without plunging again into a bloody war.
I'm completely blown away, easily one of the coolest movies I've seen in a long time. This is the third Kitamura film I have viewed, and out of the three (the others were Heat After Dark and Versus), I can honestly say I believe this to be his best.
Don't get me wrong, I love Versus. It's a great film, but this one trumps it on nearly every level. From the first 10 minutes I was hooked, and it never let up.
This film boasts some of the best action sequences in recent memory, especially if you love samurai films. The movement of characters is unreal, some of the smoothest wirework I've ever seen. It feels very much like a living anime.
Anyway, seek this film out and buy it! Don't rent it, just buy it! You will thank me for it.
Azumi is trained to become an assassin, however, as she begin to question her path in life, her enemies are not far behind.
I have had friends rave about this samurai film, and according to one particular friend, it was the movie that immortalised the long forgotten 'Samurai' genre, but I found this film to be quite disappointing.
The plot was very minimal, with no real character development and the script itself was very weak, the actors chosen to play their respected roles, simply did not do the trick; Aya Ueto, is awful as the warrior without fear, I liked her better in 'Attention Please!'..Now, if the plot, characters, script is terrible, surely the action will make up for it...No...The action is simply awful, I liked the occasional one slice kill, but it just seems to be rushed and all a big catastrophe.
Features more than enough thrilling wirework, slow and agonizing deaths, and blood-spattered faces to please even the most discriminating fans of the genre.
Like several other Asian movies, there are two versions floating around. First, there's an International cut for worldwide distribution and then, there's the original Asian, in this case, Japanese version that runs several minutes longer than the International version. Most of the differences result from trimmed plot sequences that were cut with the intention to make the International version a bit more dynamic. 7cb1d79195
