When a twenty-something computer geek inadvertently downloads critical government secrets into his brain, the C.I.A. and the N.S.A. assign two agents to protect him and exploit such knowledge, turning his life upside down.
When Chuck Bartowski gets kicked out of Stanford and stuck in a dead end job as a computer nerd for the Buy More he is accidentally sees an email full of government secrets sent to him by an old college buddy forcing Chuck into a world of spies, danger, and frenzy.
Let me start this off by saying this: I recently discovered Chuck through Netflix and sat through the entire show in a single week. That's roughly one season per day, and I LOVE this show. I cannot begin to describe the empty feeling of being all the way through it. Akin to how I felt when my favorite show of all time, Dexter, went off the air for good. And while not quite as on par with Dexter, Chuck is the closest of close seconds, bordering on a complete tie. Now onto an actual review:
Pros: EXCELLENT CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. You will love these characters and by the end of the show, you will feel like you personally know them. The character development is top notch. GREAT COMEDY. Despite it being a drama-dy, it's loaded with excellently written situational humor. Don't expect slapstick humor akin to what you would find in The Other Guys, this is more situational and it pulls it off splendidly. ACTION PACKED. This show has TONS of action and all of it is really well done. There are very few moments when the required use of CGI is a bit noticeable, but for a prime-time show, the production value is excellent. THE ACTING. Every actor fits their part so perfectly that it amazes me still. The main reason I started watching this show is because I love Yvonne Strahovski (discovered her with Dexter) and the real underdog her that just won me over was Adam Baldwin as John Casey. Absolutely splendid. And the honorable mention is Ryan McPartlin as Devon "Captain Awesome" Woodcomb who is responsible for many of my favorite comedic parts.
CONS: Only one that I can think of and that is that, at times, the show can be A BIT formulaic, in that in the earlier seasons, the episodes follow a go to formula that you can begin to see when you watch them back to back, and that's: situation is presented, the team deploys, good guy vs. bad guy action, chuck is a dunce and complicates things, they triumph anyway and all seems well, all is in fact not well and they must triumph a second time, finally putting the situation to rest. This is the definitive Chuck formula, but damn it does it work. The one thing I truly found irritating was Sarah Walker's flip-flopping. I mean for 3.5 seasons she's playing a constant "I love him, I love him not" game and it can be quite frustrating, especially when they see other people and even more so when those other people are irritating as hell (looking at you MI6 agent guy).
All in all, if I could summarize this show with one word it would be: BRILLIANT. Chuck is just an amazing piece of work and you will love it from start to finish, I promise you that. And if you don't, perhaps you should contact the CIA to see if they have an INTERSECT because your brain needs fixing.
WATCH IT AND THANK ME LATER!
This is one of my all time favorite shows for the following reasons:
1. It has a great premise 2. Each story has a beginning, middle, end, build, great dialog, and has the grand illusion of being believable. 3. It is well-written. Each episode has movement and each scene is well timed. The characters are all believable. 4. It is brilliantly acted by all of the the cast, mainly, Yvonne Strahovski.
I'm one of the toughest customers alive for a good story whether it is in a book, a motion picture or a TV show and if it is in the latter, it better be a great story that is well-acted and Chuck delivers. It is an excellent TV show and contrary to one reviewer's opinion, the blend of comedy, action, and drama works beautifully together. It's got it all. The naysayers (the minority) that gave it 2 stars or less have a right to their opinions. I'll leave it at that.
