Book descriptionThe book I read to research this post was Cultureshock Portugal by Volker Poelzl which is an excellent book which I bought at a car boot sale. This book is part of a series of books which cover many cities and countries. They focus more on their culture and customs than on sights. There are quite a lot of books in the series and they are around 300 pages so are a reasonable length. Portugal for many years was technologically quite a long way behind much of the rest of Europe. That has to a certain extent changed with entry to the European Union & they have had many grants to help with this. Also Portugal has become a popular holiday destination and is also famous for its wine particularly port. In the big cities of Oporto & Lisbon they are much more technologically advanced than much of the rest of the country. It only has a population of around 10 million and is quite a small country on the Iberian Peninsular. The portugese are proud of their country and in particular their achievements but often as with a lot of countries complain about its political system. Madeira & the Azores are autonomous regions within Portugal. Anyone within the European Union can travel to Portugal quite easily without any time limits on their stay but if they wish to live permanently must comply with certain rules like have employment, be self employed or have a pension from a foreign country to live on. They are also subject to things like tax & must have accommodation. In the north of the country many people have blue eyes and blonde hair and are descended from the celts where as in the south they are olive skinned, have brown eyes and have dark hair.
