Alton Meyer is a boy unlike any other in the world with bizarrely powerful abilities and strange weaknesses. In the middle of the night, his father, Roy, spirits him away from the isolated cult that practically worships him and is determined to regain him at all costs. At the same time, Alton's abilities have been noticed by the US government as well and they are equally insistent on getting to the bottom of this mystery with Paul Sevier of the National Security Agency leading the Federal pursuit with his own questions. These rival hunts force father and son into a desperate run towards a looming date with destiny that could change everything.
Shannon and Edgerton are superb actors. The premise of the story was interesting with the cult, feds and a father fighting for his son's very existence. It all seems very intriguing, but it all kind of fizzled out for me. The film was long and didn't have a great pay out in the end. While the child at the center of this story seems like a sweet little boy with some beams of light blazing from his eyes, there was no real why or how? *Spoiler Alert* Yeah, he is really part of another reality and somehow landed on THIS earth. But, his abilities weren't really explained and how he came to this conclusion about himself because he saw the rising sun, I don't get. Maybe the film was too existential for me or maybe the writer and director just failed to deliver a great movie. Overall, it was interesting with some visually-pleasing special effects but the story just went flat for me. I will still watch anything starring Shannon and Edgerton though. They're great actors!
There are a lot of things that need to go right in order for a successful film to be produced. "Midnight Special" does most of those things right. However, it is completely negligent on one key area: plot payoff. While the acting performances are solid and the overall plot builds suspense, there is absolutely no payoff in the end.
For a basic plot summary, "Midnight Special" tells the story of young Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), a boy with special powers of some sort who is highly coveted by the federal government, in particular one man named Sevier (Adam Driver). Because of this, Alton is on the run the entire movie (as viewers are slowly filled in on the "details" of his abilities). Along for the journey are father Roy (Michael Shannon), mother Sarah (Kirstin Dunst), and family friend Lucas (Joel Edgerton).
There are many things that the film does right. It creates and builds tension/drama, the acting is terrific, and it's a giant mystery in that you never are really quite sure where it is all leading. All of those things combine to create a great atmosphere in "Midnight Special".
What sabotages the whole product, however, is the fact that nothing is ever explained or makes sense once the credits roll. I understand that you don't always have to "dot all the i's and cross all the t's" in a mystery film, but you need to do the basics, and that is where "Midnight Special" fails miserably. The whole film structure is a slow "reveal", but then you get to the end and nothing (or very, very little) is actually revealed. So, while "the journey" may have been fun, not enough of a reward was given in the end to make any of it feel memorable or significant.
As much as I want to give this movie a better rating (2.5 would be my exact star rank), as it does so many other things well, I just can't do it because it left me so disappointed upon the conclusion. A perfect example of how the storytelling method itself can often get in the way of what the payoffs need to be in the end.
Midnight Special confirms Nichols' uncommon knack for breathing dramatic integrity and emotional depth into genre material.
