Junbao (Jet Li) is a monk who grows up in a Shaolin temple with his friend Tienbao. Their friendly competitions to see who is stronger frequently gets them into trouble. At a competition for promotion to a higher place in Shaolin, Tienbao almost kills another student for cheating and using a concealed weapon. After a disagreement with a master, who refuses to believe Tienbao, a fight erupts which results in Junbao and Tienbao being expelled from the temple. Having lived in a temple their entire lives, they have trouble adapting to the outside world and eventually gets mixed up with local rebels who frequently steal from a corrupt governor and give the proceeds back to the poor. Tienbao, who was always very ambitious and competitive, gets tired and disillusioned by their new lifestyle, accepts an offer by the governor to join his army. The two childhood friends reluctantly decide to go their separate ways. Seeing an opportunity to secure a promotion in the army, Tienbao sets a trap for Junbao and the rebels by giving them false information. Many rebels are killed in the ensuing battle and Junbao, in disbelief that his friend would betray him, temporarily loses his mind. He only recovers by discovering the art of Tai Chi with the help of his friends and a book that his former master had given him prior to leaving Shaolin. In a final showdown, Junbao kills Tienbao after realizing his boyhood friend is beyond salvation. *I figure I'd write a summary that isn't written in broken English.*
Jet Li plays Junbao, a child that grows up as a monk in a Shaolin temple along with his friend Tianbao. During a friendly competition, they are both expelled during a vicious fight when another competitor cheated by using a weapon. They wander China and during a performance, Junbao and Tianbao go their separate ways, Tianbao joining the military, and Junbao joining the rebels opposing the government. Tianbao, hungry for power and wealth, sets-up and betrays his lifelong friend, Junbao, in an ambush to attain the rank of general. Junbao, stricken with grief and disbelief, turns to Tai Chi to help. The climactic finale pits Tianbao against Junbao in a martial arts battle that rages throughout a military encampment while an army of thousands look on.
i really hate being able to see the wires when wire fighting. it REALLY bugs me. i see the wires and thats all i can focus on. which is why The Tai Chi Master didnt score better. i saw the wires Jet and Co. were using the whole time! other than that, a good action flick sprinkled with very funny humor.
Let me first say that I don't really need Jet Li to smile and crack jokes. To me, he's more interesting and enigmatic when he's doing his Buster Keaton scowl. The determination is part of what make his effortless moves so amazing. If I was silly drunken exploits mixed with martial arts, usually I'd rather watch Jackie Chan do it. That said, I don't remember when I last saw a movie as relentlessly fun and Twin Warriors (the American title of the film apparently called Tai ji Zhang San Feng in Hong Kong). It's more fun than any Chan film that I've seen and far more entertaining than anything either actor has done on this side of the Atlantic.
Inevitably in Hong Kong, this film was longer. And perhaps the "plot" made more sense. Not that that's worth caring about. Basically, Jet Li and Chin Siu-hou are exiled monks who end up on opposite sides of the law. Michelle Yeoh shows up for very little reason, but nobody's complaining. With no more than that to keep the film going narratively, nine out of every ten minutes is spent fighting.
And what marvelous battles they are, inevitably featuring our plucky heroes, Jet and Michelle, fighting against dozens of armed adversaries. Directed by Woo-Ping Yuen, who's now best known as the master behind The Matrix's martial arts sequences, Twin Warriors adds a new twist in every battle, whether it's Yeoh turning a broken bar table into stilts, or Li deciding to fight an entire skirmish using only his head. Sure. It isn't realistic. Because people don't fly. And they rarely bounce around on their heads like human pogos. They climb walls and it's even rarely for people to battle balanced precariously on thin ropes. Fabulous tricks all.
As I said, Li is probably a little too silly for my tastes. When he pretends to be a duck toward the end of the movie, it grates a little. But of course when he's fighting you just marvel at his form and at the fact that you almost believe he could do it all. Yeoh is similarly weak when she isn't fighting and she spends a bit too much of the movie being victimized to actually be doing her full duty as a twin warrior.
Still and all, as films of this genre go, it doesn't get much better than this. I'd give this one 8/10 and that might be being a little stingy.
This minor classic from Jet Li's pre-Hollywood era (directed by Yuen Woo-Ping and also starring Michelle Khan) was - as happened with many HK movies - cut, redubbed and equipped with a new score for the US release (repsonsible this time: Dimension Films). At least there is not as much missing as is the case with other movies, besides one violence cut it is mostly the typical HK humor that was removed. Luckily, in 2008 Dragon Dinasty and Bey Logan released the uncut version on DVD and Blu-Ray in the US. Approx. three minutes are missing in the old US Version.
Also, there's a Taiwanese release where a fight scene is missing. It could be either due to editing errors or a deliberate removal because it is a fighting technique referring to Buddha that could have been perceived as critical in Taiwan. 646f9e108c
