On New Year's Eve, inside a police station that's about to be closed for good, officer Jake Roenick must cobble together a force made up cops and criminals to save themselves from a mob looking to kill mobster Marion Bishop.
A police sergeant must rally the cops and prisoners together to protect themselves on New Year's Eve, just as corrupt policeman surround the station with the intent of killing all to keep their deception in the ranks.
As a snowstorm hits the soon to be defunct police station precinct 13, Sergeant Roenick is perturbed to take delivery of a bus load of crooks, one of which is gang-lord Marion Bishop. Not longer after the crooks are locked down in their cells, the precinct comes under siege from a gang of heavily armed assailants. With just a couple of colleagues for help, Roenick must make some very big decisions if they are to survive the night.
I wish to put on record my love and admiration for John Carpenter's original Assault On Precinct 13 feature film, in fact for the record I'm a John Carpenter acolyte. I also wish to say that I think myself fortunate that I can separate a remake from the original offering, I am in short, a conscientious purveyor of objectivity. Remakes are never an easy thing, and many fail to improve on the film they are re-imaging, it's especially difficult to update a cult classic film such as this one, and The Italian Job for examples, but when viewed separately, and on its own terms, Jean-Francois' Assault On Precinct 13, is a fine no brain popcorn effort. Yes it's nowhere near close to the grimness that was brilliantly evident in Carpenter's wonderful film, but as a cop and crooks exercise, it delivers fine set pieces, gun play abound, and a terrific cast eager to enjoy the ride for our personal entertainment. Ethan Hawke, Laurence Fishburne, Gabriel Byrne, Brian Dennehy, John Leguizamo, Ja Rule, Maria Bello and Drea de Matteo, all are given intriguing characters with something to add to the bubbling thriller stew.
Personally I feel that this picture is harshly treated, because as remakes go it does entertain those willing to judge it for what it is. It's not asking people to forget the original, it's merely being popcorn fodder for the suitably inclined and it's actually great fun. 7/10
I've not seen the original film - yet - so I've nothing to compare this remake to, but if the original is as enjoyable as this then I'll be looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about. I know remakes can get battered by a lot of people true to the original films, but instead of complaining about them, I like to have an open mind, and it's only after watching them I'll comment.
Not all remakes/reboots are bad.
Anyway, this version of Assault on Precinct 13 is a very decent action/thriller that's (mostly) well scripted, well filmed, and very well acted. I say "mostly" with regard to the well scripted comment because there were a couple of moments where the dialogue was a bit cheesy. Thankfully it was only mild cheese instead of full blown blue stilton. Then again, I guess you can't have an action film without at least some cheese. Other than that, however, the film is written well enough with a nice wee twist at the end.
One thing that can sometimes be ignored in a lot of action films is the cinematography but with this film I enjoyed some of the outdoor scenes with the way the makers set the tone & atmosphere using the weather. It's not a huge thing and it is subtle but for me it was a nice touch.
The main cast all give solid performances, from John Leguizamo's portrayal as Beck, a somewhat amusing (yet slightly annoying at the same time) small-time crook, to Laurence Fishburne's role of Marion Bishop, a more calculating & menacing mob boss.
For me, the only unrealistic element of the film was the amount of police that ended up being involved. I mean the initial group led by Gabriel Byrne is understandable given the circumstances, but in the end it just went a bit over-the-top. But, this IS an action film and not a documentary, so, again, unrealistic moments are to be expected and it's not as if it ruins the experience.
As long as you're not naive to expect something fantastic, then you should find this film enjoyable enough.
The main thing this "Assault" lacks is a point. Mr. Carpenter's film still resonates with the political paranoia and social unease of the era. Mr. Carpenter's cynical refusal to distinguish clearly between good guys and bad guys feels freshly unsettling, while Mr. Richet's "modernization" looks like something we've seen a hundred times before.
