Benjamin Finnegan is a deep-sea treasure hunter certain he's onto the find of the century in waters near an island close to Key West owned by a murderous rap star to whom Ben is in debt. Ben's flat broke and recently divorced from Tess, his long-time research and diving partner whom he still loves. She's nearby, working as a steward aboard the yacht of Nigel Honeycutt, a multimillionaire. The rapper has hired a rival treasurer hunter. Can Ben convince Nigel to bankroll his search, convince Tess to work with him, keep the rapper and his thugs at bay, and find a Spanish treasure hidden for centuries and rich beyond imagination?

I must admit I ignored the critics views, being a woman, and after viewing the trailers I thought I would just love this movie. I don't view many movies because they always always throw some gay people in them. Well, this was just another GAY movie in my opinion. I believe I am done trusting the Hollywood movies. Made me sick! The movie itself was OK, needed more of a story and had no excitement at all. Just a teenage corny touch to it. I think they call that a "B" movie. There is a daughter who is really brainless, which I have never met anyone this stupid in my life. Did she live extremely sheltered off from the world? The rich guy was good but could have done more acting. He is a quality Actor too. The couple who love each other needed to show more interest and not be so brainless too. This is my honest opinion of the whole movie. What a waste of time and money at the tune of $8.00 per person.
It is far from a bad film...unless you are the kind of person that just can't stand a fun, pulp adventure story.
Basically all this movie is is a pulp novel turned into a movie.
Had it been made in the Golden Age of Hollywood right up to the 1980s it would have been a hit. Had it been made in the 1990s it would have been a modest success...
But it was made in 2008 and the tastes of the world had changed. 9-11 had come and gone and people lost that childlike innocence that is needed to enjoy films like this. The Computer Age dawned and everyone wanted nothing but over-the-top special effects.
So fun adventures were shoved to the side and the critics--that still claim to love fun adventures like Captain Blood--turned their noses up at anyone that even hinted towards enjoying them.
What you have is a treasure standing in for the MacGuffin, a roguish hero, a little bit of a love triangle, and the open seas.
It is classic Hollywood. It is also, unfortunately, they kind of movie we need today and the kind that Hollywood is most reluctant to make.
Tennant keeps his extravagantly stupid new comedy breezing along affably on the strength of photogenic locales, obscenely beautiful stars, a laid-back soundtrack, and a wholesale unwillingness to take itself the least bit seriously.
