The stable wormhole discovered by the Deep Space Nine crew is known to the Bajoran people as the Celestial Temple of their Prophets. Sisko, as discoverer of the wormhole and its inhabitants, is therefore the Emissary of Bajoran prophesy. The wormhole's other end is in the Gamma Quadrant, halfway around the galaxy from Bajor. That section of space is dominated by the malevolent Dominion. The Dominion is led by the Changelings, the race of shapeshifters to which Odo belongs. As of the beginning of the sixth season, Cardassia has joined the Dominion, and together they are waging war on the Federation and their Klingon allies. The war is quickly becoming the most costly war ever for the Federation, and the Deep Space Nine crew must fight to protect their way of life.
In the vicinity of the liberated planet of Bajor, the Federation space station Deep Space Nine guards the opening of a stable wormhole to the far side of the galaxy.
Startrek: Deep Space Nine is my favorite Star Trek series so far.
The plots, the characters and their development is well crafted, and DS9 lacks many of the cheesy episodes The Original Series (TOS), The Next Generation (TNG) or Voyager (VOY) had.
If you are still unfamiliar with it, but know TOS and TNG (or the later series VOY and Enterprise (ENT)), DS9 might be a change for you. Since it is based on a single space station, it is less about exploring space. There are still several episodes featuring space travel or (pseudo)scientific discoveries, but for the main part, the show is about the station and its effect on the characters and the interstellar nations around it.
Especially in the beginning, the differences prove difficult for "old-school"-Trekkers (even those - like me - that became regular watchers with TNG). There are several episodes that combine elements from previous episode.
But all this turns into a strength, I think, when you get familiar with the series. Startrek DS9 was the first Trek series (and maybe still is) that created a cohesive storyline. The recurring characters are always enjoyable, and while there still is a lot of it, the techno-babble is not as worse as in TNG or even VOY. The focus is on the characters and the storyline. It is really interesting to see how the friendships among the main characters grow, and how the relationships change. (O´Brien begins more or less being annoyed by Bashir, at the end, they are best friends. Gul Dukat, a recurring character, begins as an evil enemy, becomes an ally and than turns back to be the enemy)
Space Action fans might also be intrigued by the last seasons, especially at the climax of the War against the Dominion. The Combat scenes are awesome. (And are even better if you are a real Trekkie, because little is more fascinating than watching an entire wing of one of your favorite ships - the Galaxy Class - engaging enemy forces. Even the movie "First Contact" seems weak against this, since it features only new ship models never seen before.)
Many people compare DS9 and Babylon 5. I enjoyed both (and I even bought 2 Seaons of B5 on DVD), so don`t expect me to decide between them. I think both are great shows, and wouldn`t want to miss any of them. Both shows have several similarities (both are placed on a space station, both feature a major war including changing allies and enemies, in both the Station commander goes on a personal journey), but these similarities aren`t worse then between two Hospital/Emergency Room series or privat eye series.
On a certain level, I think the tension during the war is much greater in DS9 - somehow, I can`t remember an episode on Babylon 5 where they suffered a major setback, losing a battle. But in DS9, they lose their station to the enemy, several inner planets of the Federation are being attacked by Cardassian/Dominion forces, and in one episode, the destruction of the Federation is prophecied. But on the other hand, the character development and interaction on B5 is much stronger - especially when you think of the tragical figure of Londo Mollari. (Especially since you really like the figure, despite all what he has done wrong)
This series was right up there with the best series in Sci-Fi, Babylon 5. The characters in this series really became fleshed out during the run. We get to see more of the background of the main characters than in any of the other Star Trek series.
Everyone mentions the prominent relationships in the series, but there were a host of relationships for the recurring characters as well. A few examples are:
Jake Sisko and Rom. Two lonely youngsters from vastly diverse cultures find a way to overcome their differences and become fast friends.
Kira and Ziel. Kira and Ziel develop a relationship based on mutual admiration, despite the drawback of Ziel's fiendish paternal ancestor (Gul Ducat).
Ziel and Garack. Ziel's pure character and desire to project great virtue onto Garack force him to behave in a much more noble fashion that his instincts would normally select.
Garack and Gul Ducat. Here two villains with a murky history of mutual conflict are forced to coexist for reasons of mutual benefit. You always expect that reason would yield to passion and one would kill the other.
Then there are the relationships between the major characters that form part of the subtext of the story arc.
Cisco and Kira develop their relationship from an armed truce to a very deep devotion to each other. This is not a romantic relationship but more of a spiritual connection. They both learn that the other will perform their duty, no matter the cost. Cisco develops a spiritual relationship with the prophets that Kira is never to know.
Kira and Chief O'Brien develop a close relationship after a very rocky start. Kira learns what an asset Miles O'Brien can be when force is to be applied as well as his technical skills. She later volunteers to carry the O'Brien baby to term when Keiko no longer can.
The unrequited love of Bashir for Jadzia is another strong part of the subtext. Jadzia obviously has feelings for Bashir as well, but is unwillingly swept off her feet by Worf. The death of Jadzia is obviously a crushing blow to Bashir as well as Worf. He carries on with his duties as best he can after her death.
Odo and Bashir become rather close, especially after Odo becomes infected with an artificial virus, developed to target shape shifters. Bashir moves mountains in his efforts to save Odo, which are ultimately successful.
All these rich veins of relationship contributed to making the characters familiar and believable. I always tuned in to watch how the saga would progress. The level of excellence found on B5 and DS9 have not been equaled since the end of these two series. I enjoy watching these two series on DVD after countless viewings. Hopefully, some worthy successors will eventually emerge.
The reason for TOM Riker's reaction to O'Brien was that he didn't want the chief to a5c7b9f00b
