If you hated this film you obviously don't understand and missed the whole point, like most anime's of this kind its not supposed to be clear, Eva has always been an ambiguous anime and is filled with its own depth and symbolism, people will shun and loath what they don't understand, its our own nature; but you have to see beyond the surface. I admit the first time i saw it I was confused and disappointed I had not seen the original series, but when i saw it on adult swim it helped me to understand why it ended the way it did, if you are into happier endings EOE is not for you. Let me explain some scenes which I found to be a great contribution to its symbolism, When Rei fuses with the Lilith, it seems like a random act that would give you that type of random result but its a sort of reference, in the bible angels who would impregnate mortal women would give birth to giants, now Rei was not given birth to but grew to a immense size because of her fusion with an angel(which also means a being superior to man), another is when Shinji was held in place by the Eva series, the symbol that they create is supposed to be the tree of life, which in Genesis Adam and Eve did not take a bite of its fruit, by doing so man becomes god sense we already taken a bite of the tree of wisdoms fruit. There is plenty more to find but that all depends on how much you are willing to understand.
I enjoyed the movie for the sheer fact of watching all my favorite characters killed off. however, when it comes to depth, i think the original series ending does the show far more justice. This ending is almost a joke when you look at it critically. it was just made to appease the minds of shallow people who were totally confused by the original ending to the series. i would reccomend that you go see this movie, but watch the REAL ending to the show first.
