The story of the Newton gang, the most successful bank robbers in history, owing to their good planning and minimal violence.
Four Newton brothers are a poor farmer family in the 1920s. The oldest of them, Willis, one day realizes that there's no future in the fields and offers his brothers to become a bank robbers. Soon the family agrees. They become very famous robbers, and five years later execute the greatest train robbery in American history.
Frankly, I don't know what possessed me to rent this video, and once I started watching it I couldn't believe I'd wasted the two bucks. Cute bank robbers, ooh what a concept! The acting was completely undistinguished, the plot line a joke, and nothing happened!
This is the type of non-fiction movie that is so fictional that one begins to doubt that this ever happened. Dialogues between towns folk and Newtons durning bank robbers are all to cleverly depicted and most of us have already seen Butch Cassidy. A reluctant brother and the squandering of their proceeds are all too recognizable and predictable, making for a somewhat ludicrous plot. The acting is often overly dramatic and far too clever to be taken seriously. American westerns have forgotten what their past or perhaps they are confusing it with the present.
What The Newton Boys lacks in dramatic definition, it more than compensates for with its underlying intelligence and visual luster.
