In 1939, an intrepid reporter in New York City makes a connection between the story she's covering -- of famous scientists suddenly disappearing around the world, and a recent attack on the city by giant robots. Determined to find the solution to these happenings, she seeks the help of her ex-boyfriend, the captain of a mercenary legion of pilots. The two are investigating the case when the robots attack the city again, though in a stroke of luck, Sky Captain's right-hand man is able to locate their source. They then set off on an adventure in search of the evil mastermind behind these schemes, who is bent on creating a utopia and destroying the current world.
After New York City receives a series of attacks from giant flying robots, a reporter teams up with a pilot in search of their origin, as well as the reason for the disappearances of famous scientists around the world.
I thought the direction sucked. Not very original at all - borrows visuals from War of the Worlds and Flash Gordon. I grew up watching and loving these movies from the 30's and 40's and this film just doesn't capture the feel of this era that it intended - and Paltrow ain't no Bacal. The characters were also very bland and unsympathetic. I know the director tried to create some suspense and action in the movie but really, it's a yawner. There isn't anything in this movie you haven't already seen before - save your money. If your in the habit of shelling out money just to see Jude Law, Paltrow, or Jolie be my guest - or send me your 12 bucks and I'll send you a host of pictures of each via e-mail.
"Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" is one of the best movies of the year, and one of the most visually distinctive films of the year. The "look" is the main thing about this film; this is the most stylistically distinct film of the year, maybe of the last ten years. If "Sky Captain" doesn't win the FX Oscar, there is no justice in the world. I though the all CGI thing might wear thin, and detract from the story, but it worked superbly. The actors are shot mainly in soft focus; straight lines are mainly reserved for machines and such. The best visuals were the opening Hindenburg III docking sequence, the "map" effects, and the mobile airstrip. Jude Law was very good as Joe; Gwyneth Paltrow was great, despite being saddled with a few bits of bad dialogue and one rather odd plotting decision. Angelina Jolie was good, but she's barely in the film. Giovanni Ribisi was hilarious as Joe's Q (Desmond Llewelyn, not John DeLancie). Bai Ling as La Femme Vader was a bit of a disappointment, though; no dialogue at all, just a really cool costume. Michael Gambon had all of three scenes, but that's about what he got in "Open Range". There were some clunky moments, but that's to be expected; some of them have to do with the style of the old serials, and some are just bad moments, no matter what the time. When Dr. Jennings has just finished telling Polly that he is one of seven scientists who worked on Project 11, and that the other six are gone, and that there is only one left, she proceeds to ask him who they are coming for. Well, gee golly Polly, could it be Jennings? Also, while I don't have a problem with the name Polly, having her name be Polly Perkins is stretching it a bit.
