Book descriptionBuderi presents a definitive account of the development and some of the 20th century applications and extensions of radar. In its reach, it outshines more circumspect accounts such as Fishers A Summer Bright and Terrible which focuses on British efforts to develop radar and its application to defense in the Battle of Britain. It is my impression that many of the popular histories of radar tend to focus on this aspect of radar in WWII and ignore the importance of the American effort. As Buderi himself concedes, the Manhattan Projects place in wartime science and technology tends to eclipse all other American wartime science efforts. Meanwhile, the British clearly started the allied footrace in terms of radar - so radar outshines Britains other wartime science and technology efforts. Buderis account, focusing on the incredible technical breakthroughs of MITs Radiation Laboratory (Rad Lab) corrects these oversights, and presents an often fascinating tale of the peregrinations of radar research which lead to a host of offshoot developments like nuclear resonance imaging (the forerunner of the MRI), the microwave maser that led to the more well known laser, and the importance of early digital computing. The apotheosis of WWII radar research, Buderi argues, in large part initiated by Rad Lab veteran Gordon Pettengill, was the Magellan Venus orbiter, which radio-mapped the second planets surface. However, I do have a big quibble with this book. Although nowhere nearly as bloated as Peter Galisons Image and Logic, Buderis book is too long by about a third - at least! It comes to 478 pages, and I think that the work could have been usefully truncated. Buderi aims for comprehensiveness, and especially biography, in ways that I found distracting and ultimately not very useful. For instance, much of the 30 page final chapter is filled with a where are they now? sort of biographical coda to the Rad Lab participants that left me largely cold. While marital issues and illness would be appropriate in individual biographies, I am not sure what they do here. I do concede that I often dislike biography, but what I object to is the often chronicle nature of biography (here is what happened) versus biographies that introduce material to make a point. For this reason I much prefer the more pointed and relevant biographies one finds in high quality book reviews like the New York Review of Books, Times Literary Supplement, London Review of Books, and so forth. Buderi too often falls into the camp of recounting all associated facts rather than focusing on relevant facts. The reason I complain is that the extra material often obscures his quite brilliant account of radar and the birth of modern electronics. And that is a shame because so much of this book, like Peter Galisons account of particle detectors, is truly brilliant.
