Jane Doe is found in Times Square with no memory and mysterious tattoos on her body.
A woman with no memories of her past (Jane Doe), is found naked in Times Square with her body fully covered in intricate tattoos. Her discovery sets off a vast and complex mystery that immediately ignites the attention of the FBI, which begins to follow the road map of her tattoos into a larger conspiracy of crime, while bringing her closer to discovering the truth about her identity.
**May have Spoilers** But not sure...
So back in the early 2000's there was a show called "John Doe." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0320038/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2
And the premise for this show is awfully similar to NBC's new show, "Blindspot." I remember because last summer while in Grad School to kill a few weeks of vacation before my next semester started, I went onto Hulu to find a good show to watch and I found "John Doe." It seemed intriguing...so I watched all the episodes that were on the website. Apparently it was only on for two seasons before it was canceled. Actor, Dominic Purcell, best known for being in "Prison Break" played a very convincing "John," and lets face it, he's just yummy to look at.
Now, in 2015 it looks as if "Blindspot," airing on Monday nights on NBC, has become a revamped version of "John Doe" and I have to say "John Doe" is much better. "John Doe" is more cerebral than it's 2015 counterpart. But the "old" version is better written, the acting is better, the character arch is much better--
I mean sure, it is more slower paced, because it focuses on John Doe and why he is the way he is and how he copes with a new life. For example: he's so smart he's able to play the horses, gamble and buy himself a place to live and begins to reinvent himself--all while searching for just who he is and convincing the police he's a valuable asset to them. So ya, the character development is worth the slower pace.
Let's look at the similarities and differences shall we--
Similarities:
Man/Woman Found with etched markings/Tattoos on their skin. John has scared etched (burned) markings, Jane has the tattoos.
Both are very good looking people, am I right?
Both are found NAKED (this cannot be a co-ink-e-dink!)
Both cannot remember who they are.
They both seem to know an Asian language for some inexplicable reason. (John is found by a Cambodian merchant ship and talks to them in Mandarin without realizing it, and Jane uses a rare Chinese language to speak to a suspect, to her surprise, she can speak it!)
They have a Police/FBI partner who helps them find out who they are, and of course there's that silly sexual tension! But they fight/work well together of course.
Both are basically police procedural dramas camouflaged as a hero's journey.
Each week they both find out something new about themselves that they don't seem to like, yet they also find their humanity.
The Differences:
John could be from space or created from some big foreign bad guy conglomerate. We never know because the show got canceled.
John Doe is set in Washington or Oregon, I forget.
Jane is living in New York!
Jane is like a Le Femme Nakita, trained in some secret military operation that goes bad perhaps?
John is a dude, and Jane is,well...a bad ass fighting WOMAN!
Of course the 2015 remake, (and yes I believe it to be a remake, you can have new actors, writers, directors, producers, etc. but it feels the same), has more action and fight sequences...and of course the shaking camera, tilted just so, for that nauseous feeling that's right there in the back of my throat.
The lens flares, ALA JJ Abrams style, is another new thing this show just had to adopt, but when you peel back all that modern tech, they are one and the same, and I hate to say it but "John Doe" is the winner of the two. Go watch it!
(I do hope I'm wrong about Jane Do...er..I mean, "Blindspot" I am keeping my fingers crossed that it get's better with time. If it doesn't, I'll just have to forget about it. :/ )
You know something is out of sort when 30 minutes into the show you feel like an hour has past. It's been my experience that if something doesn't engage the viewer within the first 20 to 30 minutes of a show then the show (for me) is at an end. And here in Blindspot that very thing didn't happen - I could not connect with any element of the story.
First I found the behavior of Jane Doe mostly laughable and the FBI reaction to her behavior as comical. Suddenly Jane Doe becomes 'boss lady' when she exerts herself, Investigator Weller's lower jaw teeth look weird and just dominated all his closeups, and the Chinatown scene where Jane Doe beats the crap out of 3 men and breaking windows & furniture, and nobody upstairs hears a thing! Its just comical and boorish. I could not finish the first episode.
Bad script (no memory of anything in her life and they are going to get her a menu to choose something to eat, remember that?) Think about it! Then they run off to Chinatown and she's their only interpreter available? No!
