Comic caper movie about a plan to steal a gold shipment from the streets of Turin by creating a traffic jam.
Charlie's got a 'Job' to do. Having just left prison, he finds one of his friends has attempted a high risk job in Italy right under the nose of the Mafia. Charlie's friend doesn't get very far so Charlie takes over the 'Job'. Using three Mini Coopers, a couple of Jaguars and a bus, he hopes to bring Torino to a standstill, steal the Gold and escape.
The Italian Job (1969): Dir: Peter Collinson / Cast: Michael Caine, Noel Coward, Maggie Blye, Benny Hill, Raf Vallone: Amusing comic caper about operations. In this case Noel Coward will divert the authorities from inside a prison by causing a massive traffic jam. Michael Caine assembles a team and they will use the traffic jam as a means of stealing $4, 000, 000 in gold. Filled with funny sight jokes mostly involving car chases but the plot is detailed and the ending gives new meaning to the word cliffhanger. Directed by Peter Collinson who tries to detail the operation while capitalizing on humour. The cast is headed by a fantastic performance by Caine as the confident front man who organizes the scheme because he is the best qualified, and his last comment just before the credits roll indicate that his mind is still in motion even despite terrible odds. Coward also holds strong as a confident figure from the confines of prison. Unfortunately supporting roles play too much like a standard roll call that plays much like the structure Ocean's Eleven, and this rarely works out unless detail is given to characters. Maggie Blye plays Caine's underwritten girlfriend, and Benny Hill plays a computer genius who has a thing for overweight women. Raf Vallone plays a mafia boss who is also entangled in the plot. Well crafted film with beautiful locations and an operation that doesn't go as planned. Score: 9 / 10
The Italian Job (1969)
Dry TV humor, stretched out to two hours
Michael Caine is adorable, of course, and the movie has a silly caper flair to it, a mix of Goldfinger (with all that baggage, but Sean Connery) and Lavender Hill Mob (which has its laughs, and Alec Guinness), To Catch a Thief (also not the best film, but Cary Grant) and Charade (which has its funny, campy moments and at least a good old romance, with both Cary and Audrey). What I mean to say is, The Italian Job isn't very original, and Michael Caine isn't enough to save it, though he has saved a few movies, for sure. This one drags so often, is sexist so often (even more than a Bond film), and depends on wry little moments for its style and laughs so fully, I wanted to fast forward to the end.
I know this isn't a horrible movie, but when it asks me to be patient I quail. Why should I be? So we can watch a bunch of cads pull off a dubious heist (dubious because it's so unlikely, and yet of course, nothing is supposed to really be likely here) and see their little English ironies at work? And those cute little cars slide around like Matchbox toys?
Whatever. If you like it you like it. Which is to say, there is a British sensibility here which rubs me wrong. Monty Python I get, the Prisoner I get, Peter Sellers I get (to pick some 1960s British icons). The Beatles I get. It guess there are people, bless their impoverished little souls, who hate American film noir, so there you have it.
The cliff-hanger at the end is a perfect summation. There they are, in this comic/ridiculous suspension literally on the edge of a Swiss cliff, and the gold is about to slide into the gorge, and do we really care? Nope. And if we don't care, why are we watching? For the fun of it, the laughs, the jolly good quips that appear, spaced out between sections of filler? Not for me. It's just not comic enough or dramatic enough or surprising enough. It's just not enough, period.
In 2008, a contest was held to find a solution, and the winning entry was: Break and remove two large side windows just aft of the pivot point and let the glass fall outside to lose its weight. Break two windows over the two front axles; keep the broken glass on board to keep its weight for balance. Let a man out on a rope through the front broken windows (not to rest his weight on the ground) and he deflates all the bus's front tyres, to reduce the bus's rocking movement about its pivot point. Drain the fuel tank, which was aft of the pivot point; that changes the balance enough to let a man get out and gather heavy rocks to load the front of the bus. Unload the bus. Wait until a suitable vehicle passes on the road, and hijack it and carry the gold away in it.
It has been pointed out that the petrol tank of that model of bus is at the back, so allowing the engine to run in neutral will burn the petrol off, reducing the weight on the back part and rebalancing the bus back on the road. Yes, but it was not made, mainly because the film flopped in the United States. According to a "Making Of" documentary, in the sequel, helicopters would save the bus seen on the cliff at the end of the first film. The grateful gang would soon discover that it is the Mafia that has saved them, and the sequel would have been about stealing the gold bullion back from them. In interviews in 2003 and 2008, Michael Caine revealed that the ending would have had Croker "crawl up, switch on the engine and stay there for four hours until all the petrol runs out... The van bounces back up so we can all get out, but then the gold goes over." The bus containing the gold would crash at the bottom of the hill where the Mafia would pick it up. The sequel would then have Croker and his men trying to get it back. A novel showing a possible sequel has just been published which starts with a bus balanced on the edge of a cliff. Don't Fear The Reaper is written by Garry Kay and is available online from Lulu.com.
An alternative source gives a sequel involving the British's eternal enemy - The French. The gold falls down the mountain and is recovered by French gangsters. Instead of mini coopers, there would be battles between Croker's team and the French involving hovercrafts (Britain's other great cool vehicle of the 60s) a5c7b9f00b
