Yoga has no specific religious connotations. Its appeal is universal and is practiced by many. The Upanishads, the Mahabharata, including the Bhagavad-Gita, Jainism and Buddhism accept yogic practices. The ‘Yoga Sutra’ of Patanjali is the oldest text book of yoga. A proper practice of the exercise prepares the body and the mind of yoga practitioner to make spiritual progress. At the physical level, the methods comprise numerous yoga postures or asanas that aim to stay the body healthy.
Yoga isn’t for the person who eats too much, or who starves him or herself. Yoga isn’t for the person who sleeps too much, or who doesn’t sleep at all. The middle path of these is yoga. The yogi always knows how to eat, to sleep, to speak. That’s the middle path. It is the Buddha’s teaching also, the golden medium. You should go neither to the extreme, nor to this extreme. So, don’t abruptly cut off your senses. Allow the senses to enjoy the world, but don’t get carried away with them. If we know there is a limitation in everything, then life will be good to us.
