VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS is the new adventure film from Luc Besson, the director of The Professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy, based on the comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers. In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha-an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

Plot: I can forgive bad acting, arcade game looking effects, but this plot? It's so boring and contains so many irrelevant scenes that my mind was in pain 70% of the time while watching this. Looks like the plot was a thin excuse for the special effects.
Visuals: Nice foreign world building, almost like Avatar but it lasts only 5 minutes. Then we're transferred to a big space station that looks like a bad computer game. Look for Star Trek if you want good visuals.
Acting: the female lead was annoying and the male lead forgettable. Both actors look too young for their roles. Clive Owen played well though.
Please do not watch this film if you didn't give Batman vs Superman 10/10 for plot.
This movie is for certain an eye-candy spiced with lots of fine ideas and some funny moments - a good adaption of the comics as far as I can tell (I only read a few of them many years ago).
I agree that the story is nothing new or special (the first comic was released 1967, so at that times it was something new), but I disagree with the negative critics regarding the two lead roles, imo the actors do a good job playing the Major and the Sarge. And well to the story, there is far more generic stuff released recently even by BIG productions (not to mention all the pre-sequels, reboots and whatever nonsense).
All in all, if you watch a movie of Luc Besson you get Luc Besson - weird characters, superb visuals and lots of ideas, sometimes crazy good and sometimes just so-so.
I recommend this movie to you - if you like Guardians of the Galaxy and the like and/or Luc Besson movies.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets might well represent the apotheosis of Besson’s singularly loony brand of filmmaking. It’s bonkers and gorgeous and confusing and thrilling and tiring and overflowing with ideas.
