The movie begins with Sekiuchi, chairman of the Sannokai, a huge organized crime syndicate controlling the entire Kanto region, issuing a stern warning to his lieutenant Kato and right-hand man Ikemoto, head of the Ikemoto family. Kato orders Ikemoto to bring the unassociated Murase family in line for their drug trafficking business, as he knows that Ikemoto is Murase's sworn brother. Ikemoto immediately passes the task on to his subordinate Otomo, who runs his own crew. Ikemoto is suspecting that Sekiuchi has lost confidence in him and instructs Otomo to "shake up" Murase as to make it look like that have "a little quarrel". What ensues is series of violent events in between which everybody is trying to trick everyone behind his back for their own benefit.
The boss of a major crime syndicate orders his lieutenant to bring a rogue gang of drug traffickers in line, a job that gets passed on to his long-suffering subordinate.
Kitano is a master when it comes down to Japanese crime movies. It's not only the crime that he is showing (explicitely), but the characters he is describing. And while a friend of mine felt this was weak for Kitano standards, he admitted he thought it was still a good movie. I only agree with the latter.
Of course he has done better movies (Hana Bi to name but one), but still that does not diminish this one as a lesser effort. It is a different beast. Which also is true of his character and/or the other characters. With a weird sense of humor (and Honor), this goes places some only dream of. And does pull it off so easily you wonder, how it comes that there aren't many other movies with that easy flow, when it comes down to portray criminals as human beings too.
Consider it a comedy or an action movie (or both for that matter), one thing is for sure: If you let yourself into it, you will enjoy it very much
I waited for it since a while now. And I saw what I expected. I love yakuza movies, especially Kitano's. They are different from the other ones. Filming and editing are unusual, surprising if you compare with the 60's and 70's stuff. Violent and sadistic yes, but in a more stylistic manner, with no excess and outrageous brutality, as we saw three decades ago. But this film is also different from the ordinary Kitano's yakuza material. Because there is here ABSOLUTELY no emotion at all. I remember his previous features such as SONATINE, HANA BI, and especially BROTHER - I don't have VIOLENT COP clear in my memory - and, in those films, I felt really something poignant in the stories and characters. Characters whom you could feel empathy for.
But in this one, no Sir. The usual 2000's yakuza stuff, perhaps without the eccentricity of a Mike Takashii. A brutal, sharp and cold yakuza crime film about dog fights to get to the top of the underworld.
And, I think there was more sequences with guys shots by the bullets, than in the other Beat Takeshi's films...
In BROTHER, for instance, he only suggested. And this was a very brutal flick in the same time. But with a kind of poetry that we did not find here.
Another style.
Like one of its yakuza bigs, Outrage commands respect but no affection.
