After her ex-husband Carlos shoots Celeste three times in the gut, it's time to play dirty. In the fight for her godson, Rob, she hires three outlawed and redneck brothers to bring him back to her. But nothing can be that simple in the South. What begins as a small rescue mission rises to a southern battle royale. This odd team must shoot their way through gorgeous female assassins, Native American hunters, Federal agents, and a whole lot of metal coming after them, while protecting Celeste's innocent child.
When three redneck brothers agree to help a woman save her godson from an abusive stepfather, they become targets on the run from an odd cast of characters.
This movie is set up to be a B-movie, with a B-movie script, and B-movie clichés. If you expected else, the joke is on you. If you know what you are getting into, the movie delivers as it should. I would have been greatly disappointed if there would have been any attempts to sugar-coat this movie as anything else.
Vastly more enjoyable to watch when you're bored than some A-script nonsense, but it won't change your life or make you ponder the existential questions of the world as we know it. Take it for what it is.
I'm giving extra thumbs up for the soundtrack of the movie, which is actually quite good. Well worth checking out.
Although the movie is as of Robert Rodriguez has met Larry Bishop, there are - apart from evident clichés and imitations - several twists and new angles. Of course, there are lots of strained and improbable scenes and some characters (e.g. ATF agent Reese) provide no additional value to the movie. Inclusion of different kicking-butt groups is too much, even based on the hectic and chilly plot. And the ending is unrealistic as well - if we bear in mind actual US legislation on gunned violence and harassment.
The cast is evenly strong, providing several splendid performances (Clayne Crawford, Billy Bob Thornton, Thomas Sangster, above all), and many smaller parts are played by top-grade actors. The movie's 1,5 hours is okay for killing time seeing lots of killings and other stuff on screen...
The Baytown Outlaws" avidly subscribes to the grindhouse aesthetic of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. If it has the right spit-in-your-face attitude, it has neither the stamina nor the wit to go the distance, although it makes it about two-thirds of the way.
