In a futuristic USA, it's forbidden to give birth to more than one child for each woman. As usual, you can escape to Mexico to avoid the authorities in USA, which is exactly what John and Karen Brennick were trying to do when Karen is pregnant with her second child (their first child was born dead). When they think they have made it they are discovered and put to prison (for 31 years), a modern prison called the "Fortress" where the prisoners are controlled by lasers, neutron-cannons, cameras, mind-scanners and electronic pain-causing devices in their stomachs. With those odds, John still plans to escape with his wife.
In 2017, John Henry Brennick and his wife Karen are captured at a US immigration point with an illegal baby during population control. The resulting prison experience is the subject of the movie. The prison is run by a private corporation bent on mind control.
The only player who can act even marginally in this turkey is Kurtwood Smith but, of course, he had practice in the Robocop series. Loryn Locklin had no such experience, She wanders in a daze through the conventional plot, resembling a lost cocker spaniel. Christopher Lambert, on the other hand, never seems dazed, alternatively sullen or glowering. It seems clear that the producers spent all that money on special effects to divert attention from a cast that might be more usefully employed in a fast-food restaurant. If the producers really wanted to improve movies, they would send Locklin and Lambert to acting school. "Crimes does not pay"--neither do bad movies.
Make no mistake: "Fortress" is a bad movie. I don't know what it is about Christopher Lambert, really; perhaps the only movie he's ever made that's truly worth watching is "Highlander," and even so it's no work of art. Apparently he's no better as a French-language actor, either, so it's clearly not a cultural-barrier thing.
In any case, he plays John Brennick, a retired Black Beret in a future where overpopulation enforces a one-child-per-woman policy. He and his wife had that one child, but it died at birth; when she gets pregnant again, they decide to flee to Mexico. The irony of people trying to get to Mexico to start a better life is about the smartest element of the entire movie.
They're caught, and sent to prison in the Fortress, a huge underground complex where inmates are fitted with "intestinators," small devices forced into the gastrointestinal system which create pain as a method of discipline, and serve as targeting beacons for the sentry guns of the complex.
Naturally, Brennick wants out. So in a long and drawn-out plot that brings in homosexual rape, cybernetic enhancement, thought and dream control, and cloning, he does so. No big surprise. It's shoddily written and the performances leave much to be desired. Just about every cheap time-filler that you can think of is utilised, including what may be the most hackneyed device ever - the *very* shortsighted electronics genius vital to the success of the escape loses his glasses not one but *twice.*
See it if only to justify watching the sequel, which can only be worse.
Here the situation is a bit complicated. In the States, only an R-Rated version was released, that, in the first place, cuts out two additional violent scenes. In Europe a slightly longer cut was released that still misses out these two violent scenes but features four slightly longer story scenes. Only in the UK, released on VHS and LD, the complete version of Fortress: the four story pieces + the two violent scenes, is available. a5c7b9f00b
