A getaway driver becomes the latest assignment for a tenacious detective.
In Los Angeles, a mysterious driver (Ryan O'Neal) is a sad man of few words that drives getaway car in robberies. One day, he participates of a heist of a casino and a player (Isabelle Adjani) is the main witness. However, she tells to the detective (Bruce Dern) in charge of the investigation that the suspect is not the driver of the getaway car. The detective becomes obsessed to arrest the driver and he seeks out a gang that has robbed a supermarket and promises to "forgive" their heist if they help him to arrest the driver in a bank robbery. But the player helps the driver to exchange the dirty money.
Writer & director Walter Hill ranks as one of my favorite writer & directors. Unfortunately, not everything that he wrote and directed turned out to be box office magic. More often than not, I admire his work. "Streets of Fire," "The Warriors," "The Long Riders," "Bullet in the Head," "Hard Times," "48 HRS," "Extreme Prejudice," "Red Heat," and "Last Man Standing" are my favorites. "The Driver" is not Hill at his zenith. Everything about this spartan crime thriller with car chases succeeds splendidly until the tense final confrontation between The Driver (Ryan O'Neal of "A Bridge Too Far") and The Detective (Bruce Dern of "The Cowboys") when they meet in a bus station. The Detective has done his level best to catch The Driver, but his level best isn't sufficient for the task. Meantime, The Driver lives by a code of honor, and he refuses to work with criminals who are out of control. Literally, The Driver is a lone wolf who lives off the grid. Basically, the Driver is the best getaway wheel man in the business, specifically around San Francisco, and he careens loops around the police as well as his adversaries. Indeed, The Detective refuses to arrest a criminal known only as Glasses (Joseph Walsh of "California Split") if the felon will play along with him and hire The Driver for a bank job. The Detective promises Glasses that he can walk away from 10 years in the pen if he cooperates. The Detective's antsy colleague Red Plainclothesman (Matt Clark of "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid") doesn't like this deal, and he doesn't like The Detective. The Detective shares his animosity, but they work together to trap The Driver. When somebody goes to as much trouble to trap The Driver as The Detective does, the final confrontation between the two of them should amount to a bang-up finale. Instead, they call it a draw and walk away from each other despite the rage that they feel toward each other. The Driver is ultimately an ultra-cool customer, and Ryan 0'Neal suppresses any shred of emotion in his performance, and he is ideal as the protagonist who doesn't, among other things, believe in guns. Nevertheless, he packs a Colt's six-gun when he requires it. The scene when Glasses thinks that he has the drop on our hero is fantastic. In a supporting roles as the Glasses' accomplice, Rudy Ramos of "The Enforcer" is a vicious, trigger-happy gunman named Teeth. Ramos delivers a dynamic performance. He displays his villainy when he slams a pillow over the face of The Connection (Ronee Blakeley of "Nashville") and smokes her without a qualm. This scene reminded me of a similar scene in Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" when Lee Van Cleef killed a man using a pillow. Overall, "The Driver" is great until its cop-out ending. Walter Hill orchestrates several careening car chases and the shootouts are staged with minimal flair. Several scenes at the train station with The Detective pursuing the Exchange Man (Denny Macko) reminded me of another movie that Hill scripted for Sam Peckinpah entitled "The Getaway" with Steve McQueen. San Francisco has a dark, atmospheric look like a gritty city in a film noir thriller. "The Driver" is a good movie with lots of style, but it could have been GREAT!
Ryan O'Neal is the star of the show as an expert getaway driver that no one has ever caught but now he has on his trails an obsessed cop (a nasty Bruce Dern) who is willing to use any dirty trick there is in order to catch him. This one is definitely Walter Hill's best film yet. The car chases are amazing and probably one of the best ever put on a film. Besides the car chases there is also a great story full of twists and turns that will not give you even a second to get bored. Ryan O'Neal is great as the tough and laconic hero who may very well can be compared to The King of Cool himself - Steve Mcqueen. Also features in the female leading role the astonishing Isabelle Adjani. Watch this film and if you like it I also recommend "The Getaway"(1972) and "Ronin"(1998). All in all a tough and smart action film that will definitely keep you entertained all the way to the impressive ending. 10/10
In the US, the movie is slightly cut compared to the European releases. A longer dialogue between the driver and the gambler is missing during the first half of the movie. 646f9e108c
