Academic Writing: Process and Product. Milestones in ELT. The product-oriented approach to the teaching of writing emphasizes mechanical aspects of writing, such as focusing on grammatical and syntactical structures and imitating models. However, the process-oriented approach emphasizes that writing itself is a developmental process that creates self-discovery and meaning.
Then some ESL teachers and researchers started with a pattern-product approach or writing-based approach, which focuses on creative composition and the organizational conventions used in U.S. academic prose (Reid, 1993). This approach is still applicable in the current academic setting because of its practicality.
