Hiro is a young boy who graduated at age 14 or 13. Hiro does not know what to do with his life, until he gets some help from his older brother Tadashi. Hiro applies to get in a "nerd" college, only to be traumatized. But with the help of Baymax Hamada, Hiro goes on an unexpected journey with some of his friends. Watch as Hiro Hamada takes down an evil villain and some very important people pass away.
Robotics prodigy Hiro lives in the city of San Fransokyo. Next to his older brother, Tadashi, Hiro's closest companion is Baymax, a robot whose sole purpose is to take care of people. When a devastating turn of events throws Hiro into the middle of a dangerous plot, he transforms Baymax and his other friends, Go Go Tamago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon and Fred into a band of high-tech heroes.
'Big Hero 6' is based on an obscure Marvel comic series that was adapted by Disney and reconfigured into a 3D computer-animated superhero comedy. The characters function in San Fransokyo, a mash-up obviously of San Francisco and Tokyo. At first I thought this might be a city in a future USA where somehow Japanese culture became overwhelmingly influential but it turns out the city is entirely mythical (wouldn't it have been more realistic to use China as a model for some kind of future transfiguration?).
Nevertheless, the protagonist here is Hiro Himada, a 14 year old Japanese-American robotics prodigy. I could buy the idea that the kid has developed a small robot that he uses to win cash in illegal, back alley robot fights, but what comes next strained my credulity. After Hiro's brother Tadashi saves him from a bunch of rough characters who have been engaging in robot fights on the streets, he takes him to the university where he attends, which specializes in advanced robotics. Since Hiro has a rebellious streak, he never got around to checking out the university, which is right up his alley. Oddly, to be accepted, academic performance is not considered, but rather the fledging thespian must develop a robotics project which impresses the faculty.
Hiro ends up developing a project involving 'microbots' which swarm together to form any structure imaginable. The whole idea of the university is to help the student create the next great technical innovation. Hiro, however, has already done it, so why does he have to attend a university to improve on his capabilities? Nonetheless, when he's offered the chance to sell out to tech guru Alistar Krei of the new rising tech company, Krei Tech, he goes with Professor Callaghan at the University.
'Big Hero Six' begins its march toward complete unpleasantness, when Hidashi dies in a fire at the university. Callaghan saves himself by encasing himself in a swarm of microbots during the fire. While at first Krei appears to be the villain, it soon becomes apparent that Callaghan becomes a much bigger antagonist. He blames Krei for the apparent death of his daughter during a failed teleportation experiment. Very conveniently, Callaghan uses Hiro's microbots to attempt to destroy Krei and his company.
Hiro attempts to stop Callaghan by enlisting the aid of Tadashi's last creation, Baymax, a robot that resembles the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Baymax has a computer chip that turns him into a kindly physician, who can both diagnose and treat virtually any illness. Hiro is also aided by Tadashi's team of student colleagues who morph into superheros with Hiro, replete with special costumes (a la 'The Avengers').
The last third of the picture involves tiresome battle sequences where the superhero team is pitted against Callaghan and the microbots. When the vengeful, obsessed professor is finally subdued, we're treated to the completely awkward discovery that his daughter was in stasis the whole time inside a worm hole, and is saved—only to see her idiotic father being hauled away by the police, and probably sent up the river for years due to his myopic thirst for revenge.
Hiro learns his 'lesson' after first switching Baymax's microchip, transforming him into a violent robot with enhanced karate skills, only to suddenly realize that he was echoing Professor Callaghan's proclivities toward vengefulness and realizing he needed to turn the robot back into a kindly, attending physician.
For aficionados of violent video games, a good deal of 'Big Hero Six' is for you. The painstaking animation goes all for naught when one discovers that the film is devoid of charm. Everyone and everything is obnoxious: from 'kick-ass' Hiro to Betamax, where the medical profession is put up on a pedestal. From brother Tadashi's death, to the most unpleasant Callaghan, who insanely attempts to 'get even' after an accident, this is a film that is hardly appropriate for children. If you must see it, do so for the excellent animation team—they, as opposed to the screenwriters, still have some integrity left.
Fresh from the Disney studio, another instant classic story has been revealed. Following the story of a young teen 'Hero'. Adorable and yet relatable to most at his age ,this character tugs at all the heart strings. This film also sees the introduction to a new side kick and best friend 'baymax' the cuddly marshmallow man who says little words but is full of humour and love. As well as pulling off grade A animated characters , Disney have out done themselves with the imaginative ,futuristic technology.
All good films need an evil villain and I feel his back story and appearance were great however feel we should have seen more action packed fighting scenes between 'Yokai' and the heroic members of 'Big Hero 6'.
Overall this is a FANTASTIC , must see film for all family members. Overspilling with humour , adventure and action.
The film quickly becomes a study of grief and retribution, and the question of how exactly technology can and should be utilized in the treatment of these emotions.
Big Hero 6 is based on the Marvel comic book series with the same name, though there are many differences between the comic books and the movie, such as the characters' appearances. Big Hero 6 is a Marvel movie but not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As an animated film, it focuses on a younger audience and exists in a standalone universe. It is heavily rumored that a sequel will be made. This movie itself, however, is not a sequel. The "6" in the title refers to the number of heroes on the team. First, Hiro believed that all his Microbots and his "neurotransmitter" got completely destroyed in the fire at the San Fransokyo Tech exhibition. He didn't find out that his "own" neurotransmitter was still working and newer Microbots were in construction until his one returned Microbot started to move strangely (or automatically, from his point of view). Second, creating another neurotransmitter would not help. The Microbots were programmed to react only to the first neurotransmitter that Hiro created, now worn by Yokai. For the neurotransmitter to be an "approved" invention for the exhibition, it had to allow only the wearer to control the Microbots since it was meant for "good things." While it was not mentioned, Yokai might also have made a few modifications to the neurotransmitter to ensure exclusive control in the event of another neurotransmitter turning up. While no clear specification was ever told for what Baymax can and cannot do, even if Hiro would have wanted to program Baymax to control his Microbots it would still not work properly and be pretty useless. Remember no other functional machines could access and control the Microbots except for the original transmitter. Krei is a very ignorant person, even though he might have gotten orders from the general in the film to stay away from that island and remove some important files (after the failed teleportation test) he presumably decided to keep those files untouched in order to study what was the flaws and mistakes from his experiment. Therefore he would have wanted to create another teleportation door in the future. He might have also made a deal to keep his facility opened despite the failed experiment. Fred explains that they got a helicopter lift from his butler Heathcliff. Fred might have made a phone call. Yes indeed. Stan Lee provides the voice of Fred's father in the very last minute of the "after the credits" scene. Fred finds a secret room in his house with items that suggest that his father is (or was) also a superhero. His father suddenly appears, they hug after having missed each other and gladly tells his son that they "have a lot to talk about", which might indicate that his father knows that Fred did his heroic moment. While the name (and perhaps code name) of Fred's father is unknown for the moment, his design is based on Stan Lee himself. A fun fact about this scene is that the reason why it was added is because the filmmakers got inspired by the Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy having their own after-the-credits scene. Thus adding this scene and it was also the very last scene to be animated just a few weeks before it's theatrical release. Yes, more villains were planned but did not make the final cut. One group, the Fujitas, consisted of martial artist roller women in traditional Japanese wear and makeup using medieval weapons. Mob boss Yama would lead a gang that included; rocket-powered bomber men and a sumo wrestler. These villains had great importance in the early drafts of Big Hero 6. A brief deleted scene showed that Yama, one of the Fujitas and Yokai would work together. One of the directors (Don Hall) revealed that as much as they liked the scene a lot, it didn't make it to the final draft due to the script being changed. Ultimately, Yama was reworked into a champion of illegal bot fight tournaments in San Fransokyo. The ringleader at the tournament early in the movie follows the design of the Fujitas. The directors Chris Williams and Don Hall had stated respectively:
[Laughs] We'll see. We just finished this one, and the truth is, we're exhausted from the ordeal of making it. It was really fun, but it was long hours, and it was pretty intense. It's a pretty emotional time for us. These are characters that we've grown to know very well; now it's time to let go of them, and they're going into the world without us. We're in the middle of that phase. So we haven't talked about or thought about any sequels or anything like that. Having said that, of course, we love these characters, and the thought of working with them again some day definitely has its appeal.
