A tough-as-nails detective embarks on a relentless pursuit to free his son from a nightmarish alien warship.
Mark Corley is a Los Angeles police detective who visits his estranged teenage son, Trent, having landed in jail due to brawling just as an alien invasion begins and the entire population of the city is sucked into various spaceships by the blue light. The movie succeeds at what it wants to do, give us 90 minutes of relentless action-packed alien attack slimy crazy mess. It jumps into action much faster than the first one, which is not a bad thing. The aliens and the Machines are better and their mystery is solved for us early on. Settle in with some popcorn or pizza and have fun.
Beyond Skyline picks up where part 1 left off and is now about another invasion, in which a father teams up with a group of rebels to fight of the invasion and save his son.
Beyond Skyline can't hide the fact that it is a B movie. The acting is not terrible, but non-existent. Same goes for the story and the character work. But what do you expect from a franchise that is started by the people from AvP: Requiem.
The effect are a different story. They differ from ridiculous to pretty decent. Some moments may remind you of The Power Rangers, but that doesn't bother the viewer. What saves this movie is that it nicely mixes sfi-fi and action, without being pretentious. The movie is not downgraded to a martial arts film, nor does it try to be a serious movie, but Sam Grillo, Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian in action will bring back memories to The Raid and others of the sort. Although unrealistic, their action against the decent creature performers is a very entertaining finale.
Tone is a revealing element for this project, which it borrows from the B-movie, apocalyptic seriousness of a later “Transformers" sequel. One of the movie’s biggest surprises is then that it has outtakes, which even include poking fun at how easily the intimidating alien’s costume head can fall off.
