A team of the greatest DC Comics superheroes protects Earth with the help of a pair of alien sibling apprentices.
Continuing the adventures of the Justice League, this incarnation of the show replaced Marvin, Wendy, and Wonder Dog with the Wonder Twins. Zan and Jayna, from the planet Exor, possessed shape shifting powers; Zan could become any form of water or ice, while Jayna could assume the shape of any animal. Assisted by their pet monkey Gleek, they not only helped the Justice Leaguers but lent assistance to teenagers in trouble. In addition to the classic Superman/Batman/Robin/Aquaman/Wonder Woman lineup, guests such as the Flash, the Atom, Green Lantern, and Hawkman & Hawkwoman appeared occasionally.
When this version first premiered I was wondering how I was going to like it as opposed to the original show. Even though it wasn't much better, at least it was a slight improvement. The shows tended to still be overly preachy, but at least you had some real foes for the heroes and at least Zan and his twin sister Jayna had super powers as opposed to Wendy and Marvin (they still could have eliminated Gleek, but at least he wasn't Wonder Dog).
However, they could have explained how the Twins joined the team and what happened to Wendy and Marvin. For the record, the twins were offered membership after helping the team defeat an alien who wanted to destroy Earth and Wendy and Marvin left the team after graduating from high school (Wendy went to Paradise Island to study with the Amazons and Marvin to Gotham University).
Another thing I really enjoyed was the fact that they brought in other super heroes including The Flash, The Atom, Green Lantern, Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Too bad they had to add characters like Samurai (who as another person said was a duplicate of Red Tornado), Black Vulcan (who actually should have been the moderately successful Black Lightning) and Apache Chief. I guess Hanna Barbera couldn't get permission from D.C. comics to use the heroes they were patterned after, nor could they get permission to use Green Arrow, Black Canary or Elongated Man. Maybe I would have liked this show a little more if those heroes were included.
My official first exposure to the SuperFriends was this series in 1977. I remember watching the ABC Previews the night before. Watching the theme itself totally sold me on this series. Being a Batman and Robin fan, I was already enjoying them on CBS on the New Adventures of Batman, which was about to become the Batman/Tarzan Adventure Hour. When I saw Batman flying out of the Hall of Justice behind the other heroes, I knew I would love this show. These shows were a vast improvement over the original. I liked Zan and Jayna a lot. A whole lot better than Wendy and Marvin. The Wonder Twins have always reminded me of Donnie and Marie Osmond in looks and voice. The only thing I hate the most is that #!!*! monkey of theirs Gleek. I still wonder if he was really all that necessary. After all, if you get suspended from school for vandalizing, the last thing you want to do is laugh at the antics of a stupid blue monkey.
Using the premiere episode, the lineup goes as follows. The intro followed by "Today's episodes" previews. The we got started with Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman contending with Dr. Cranum in the "Brain Machine". The we get a safety tip, then the Wonder Twins teaching two kids the dangers of a "Joy Ride". Then comes part 1 of a decoder which ties in to the big 30 minute adventure which played next. In the premiere, the SuperFriends battled rock people in "Invasion of the Earthors." During the halfway point of the episode, we get the second decoder clue and we finally decode the word after the episode ends. Then we get part 1 of a Craft or Magic Trick and the solution is revealed during the last short length episode, which is usually a rescue mission involving one of the regulars teamed up with a guest hero. And finally, we get a health tip, and finally the closing theme.
Although the shows were still moralistic and mostly have non comic book villains, they are still fun to watch. I enjoyed this variety lineup and it is my greatest wish that Warner Bros would release this series on DVD complete with its PSAs. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. The same five voice overs return and Norman Alden performs Aquaman for one more series before being replaced by Bill Callaway in 1978. The only thing close to comic book villains this show had were Manta (a watered down version of Black Manta) in "The Water Beast" and the Gentleman Ghost (Gentleman Jim Craddock) in "The Ghost". My favorite non comic villains this season are: Medulla in "The Mind Maidens" and Lionex in the "Lion Men" and Professor Thero in "Will the World Collide?"
The guest heroes had a great lineup. From the comics, we got the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman and Hawkgirl and the Atom (voiced by voice director Wally Burr). From the pulps, we got Rima the Jungle Girl and from Hanna Barbera, we got Black Vulcan, Samuraui, and probably my favorite of the three, Apache Chief. With the exception of the Flash, who only appeared once in the episode, Tibetan Raiders, the other guests appeared in two episodes each with a regular. I addition to the Batmobile, Batman and Robin now have an awesome Batcopter, Bat Jet, Bat MultiCraft, Bat Dune Buggy, and Bat Swamp Boat for transportation. The animation style may be cheesy, but it plays great next to the likes of Scooby Doo, Dynomutt, and the Laff A Lympics.
The All New SuperFriends Hour is a series I highly recommend seeing and would recommend the WB release this series next. I give this series 2 thumbs up!!
