Daew is a cop who has nailed the evil gunrunner General Yang, but his partner is killed in the case and Daew becomes depressed. However, his sister asks him to join her and some of her athlete friends to a small village to give food and toys to the villagers. What starts out as a trip to help people turns into a nightmare when Yang's men arrive at the village and take over, demanding the release of Yang or a nuclear missile will hit Bangkok. When villagers are killed left and right, Daew and the athletes must start a revolution against the tyranny before it's too late.
A group of athletes helping a poor village must stop an evil tyrant and his men from terrorizing the village.
Born to Fight isn't A: A Kung-Fu movie or B: A thinking man's thriller. What it definitely is though, is an unpretentious, full-throttle action movie. After losing his partner in a bungled raid, main character Deaw chaperones his sports-star sister on a charity expedition to a nearby village, which is promptly taken hostage by nuclear terrorists. Cue a fight to the finish to free the village.
That's it, plot wise. No more, no less. Like Police Story, Die Hard and Hard Boiled before it, Born to Fight isn't about deeper meaning, ninja skills or who's got more depth than who, it's about kicking ass and taking down names. Like those previously mentioned classics, the focus given by the paper-thin plot and characters gives the movie's action a chance to really shine.
What action it is, too. Jackie Chan and his stunt-team finally have some competition. I can't believe how totally insane some of these stunts are. From the opening lorry chase, right down to the final fight in the missile bay, every jump, fight and shoot-out is filled with tension, excitement, and what, looking at the out-takes, is genuine personal danger for the actors. Truly, this is the most over-the-top, mental stunt movie I've seen since the golden age of Jackie.
How much you enjoy Born to Fight will really depend on how you approach it. In terms of tone, the movie is slightly unbalanced, it's good-humoured, naive and pleasant characters being largely at odds with the movie's often brutal action sequences. Still, this won't be anything new to Asian movie buffs, so that's not such a problem. However, what will be is the fact that a lot of people are saying it's a Kung-Fu movie. This couldn't be further from the truth. Yes, there are fist fights, but aside from the scenes involving the sister, who's a Tae Kwon Do expert, nothing approaching trained martial arts. Ong Bak, this is not.
If you expect a straight, no-nonsense action movie ram-packed full of OTT stunts, then get out there and watch this puppy. It won't disappoint. But don't expect it to be the same as Ong-Bak, as Born to Fight is a much more traditional actioner.
As a film that exists to showcase jaw-dropping stunts, "Born To Fight" succeeds. The Thai industry is doing what the Hong Kong industry did from the early 80's to the early 90's -- it is creating a contemporary action genre. The plot is standard and the acting is wooden, but the primary village location allows for a plethora of stylized fight scenes, vehicle stunts and pictorially pleasing acrobatics.
The sequence in which a stuntman falls between two trucks and almost gets his head squashed recalls similar insanity from Hong Kong fare such as "Fatal Termination", "The Big Heat" and "Tiger On Beat 2" (who could forget Conan Lee's "accident"?). There are some great scenes in which various projectiles (some flaming) are kicked between opponents. The squibs are family-sized and the nasty actions of the mercenary raiders don't exclude the killing and maiming of children.
It all becomes a little repetitive after a while, but the film has a purity and energy to it that is most admirable. The idea of casting proficient gymnasts works well in the sense that we get a rich variety of fight styles and visually impressive maneuvers.
"Born To Fight" is not as dynamically directed as "Ong Bak" and Tony Jaa is missed, but the work of that film's stunt co-ordinator in this zippy actioner is still adequate.
