Snake Plissken is once again called in by the United States government to recover a potential doomsday device from Los Angeles, now an autonomous island where undesirables are deported.
In the year 2013, the city of Los Angeles has been separated from the country by a series of earthquakes, and like its neighbor New York, has transformed from a wonderful city to a corrupted prison. Plus, The United States has become a more moral society. Cuervo, a Cuban terrorist has used the president's daughter, Utopia to steal a device that controls a special orbiting EMP weapon system. The President has called upon the untrustworthy mercenary Snake Plissken. To ensure his cooperation, they have implanted a virus bomb inside his body, and it will inject the virus into his body in 9 hours, so Snake must stop Cuervo, rescue Utopia and get back the Weapon's device.
Like Escape from New York, Escape from LA is not to be taken seriously. Instead it is a social commentary on the politically correct attitude that society seems to have adopted. Escape From New York poked fun at the establishment as it was in the early eighties, as does Escape From LA with the politically correct nineties. I mean the whole film laughs at what western society has become. Looked at this way the movie is amusingly good, if taken seriously the film is seen as slow and misguided. Carpenter never meant the character of Snake Plisken to be seen as Rambo, he is a combination of cliched characters from other action films, all be it with some extra bite. Kurt Russell's performance in both films is spot on, and worth the price of a rental alone. The only thing lacking in EFLA is for some reason at least 1/3 of the visual effects seem poorly executed. I put this down to the fact that the movie had an enormous scale, and unlike movies such as Lost In Space there were budget restrictions. All in all a good movie. 6.5/10.
Escape from New York was not one of John Carpenter's best films, but it's a masterpiece compared to this utterly dreadful sequel, made 15 years later with the benefit of CGI technology and a budget of $50 million, compared to the original's tiny $6 million. Where did all that money go? Feeding the film crew on caviar and champagne? It certainly isn't up on the screen. In fact Carpenter managed to produce an infinitely superior film in Escape from New York on that tiny budget. Plot wise, LA is nothing more that a tired rehash of the first film. Kurt Russell repeats his Clint Eastwood impression as Snake Plisskin, who is given a few hours to go into LA, now a prison, to retrieve a doomsday device stolen by the President's daughter, before a virus injected into his body kills him. Sound familiar? Wait till you see the actual film because the script lifts dialogue, characters and even entire scenes from the original film. Carpenter has clearly attempted to satirise the action genre and the eclipsing of democratic rights in America, only he horribly misjudges the film with a fuzzy plot, dull characters, unspeakable dialogue and one of the most risibly lame endings in years. Add that to the awful special effects, the balsa wood sets (I can't believe Blade Runner's Lawrence G. Paull designed them) and the poor photography and you've got an unexciting mess that cannot even be enjoyed as camp. My review of Escape from New York at IMDb queries why Carpenter didn't

My review of Escape from New York at IMDb queries why Carpenter didn't start making films on higher budgets. After seeing the abomination that is Escape from LA, I think my question has been answered.
The movie is so cleverly entrenched in its sardonic style that Russell's toughest act must have been keeping a straight face. Escape From L.A. is surprisingly effective in picturing a former nirvana clenched in the twisted rubble of its own excess.
Director John Carpenter commented just before the release of Escape From L.A. (1996) that IF this movie was successful then he would consider a third movie and that the only place left for Snake to escape from would be Earth. "Escape From Earth" was just an idea - Carpenter never even gave that title, it's just something people assumed it would be called.

Escape From L.A. evidentley was not a commercial success and so the idea of a third movie went no further than Carpenter's comment. Depends on your point of view. Snake's decision is to essentially turn Earth's history back to the Victorian era, pre-electricity, where a man like him would flourish as a self-reliant gunfighter and despeardo. On the other hand it's suggested that humankind has deteriorated into tyranny so he essentially tears a corrupt society down and replaces it with a more egalitarian society 'Cabin in the Woods' style instead. a5c7b9f00b
