Anyone fond of sailing and adventure stories will enjoy this tautly written account of the "Ann Marie's" voyage from Bayfield, Wisconsin, through the great lakes, Erie Canal, and Hudson River to the east coast of the United States, then south to the Virgin Islands. Author Dorothy LaFond's vivid accounts of night sails, fogs, winds, waves, creativity in the cook's quarters, scenery and history bring to life a little-known part of the U.S.'s fascinating modern sailing culture. The voyage took place in 1990, when Toots was in her late 50s, divorced, with eight grown kids and several grandchildren; hence the series title, "Grandma Was A Sailor." The second book in the series, "Schooner," continues the story with Toot's years working on the tall ship "Harvey Gamage," first as crew and then as an officer and instructor for celestial navigation.
