After the defeat of their old arch nemesis, The Shredder, the Turtles are needed more than ever, but Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo have become lost and direction less. Leonardo has gone to Central America, on the orders of the martial arts master and father figure Master Splinter, for training. Donatello and Michelangelo have started small businesses in Leonardo's absence. Meanwhile, strange things are happening in New York City. An army of ancient creatures threatens to take over the world and the Turtles must unite again to save it.
When the world is threatened by an ancient evil, the four adolescent turtles must reunite and overcome their faults in order to stand against it.
I used both titles to this review because of the advertising snafu in Boston, Mass, surrounding the animated film, "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie For Theaters" (heh, colon), based on the TV series that's part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim showcase. Some Bostonians thought the LED posters displaying one of the show's characters, flipping the bird was part of a terrorist attack. Like a terrorist's that obvious, let alone dumb, to be colorfully elaborate to create chaos? Hence, the cops from "Reno 911" would be better protecting Boston than the real cops, who are clueless to pop culture.
The same adjective can be applied to most movie reviewers who slammed the recent cinematic entry of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in fourteen years, acronymically-dubbed "TMNT", calling it humorless and unnecessary. With the advent of such film websites like this one, giving a voice to the voiceless, I call the critics pompous and inevitably obsolete.
The story has our four genetically-enhanced and martial arts-trained amphibians doing their own individual thing, after finally defeating their arch-foe, the Shredder. Valiant leader Leonardo is the "ghost of the jungle", protecting small Central American villages from corrupt federal troops while going on a warrior's rite of passage; technocrat Donatello is an beleaguered IT adviser, helping clueless customers with computer problems; goofball Michelangelo works as a birthday party clown named "Cowabunga Carl" and hothead Raphael is busting law breaks as the armored vigilante, the Nightwatcher (nice suit).
Nothing's quite the same, but the brothers unite when a mysterious businessman, Max Winters, is capturing deadly monsters around New York City, with the help of four stone warriors and the Shredder's ninja army, the Foot, now led by his apprentice/adopted daughter, Karai. Seems every 3000 years, when the nine planets are align, the monsters appear and create havoc. There's a mystery here, and guess who has to solve it and save the day.
Normally, I abhor animated films, CGI or otherwise, if there's no mature elements (drama, action, nudity, explicit language) and/or I can't relate to the film itself (Dumbo is the only animated film from Disney I can watch without groaning). I don't have kids, and, if I did, they'd probably agree. So, I was surprised to be entertained by "TMNT". With exceptional CGI-animation, provided by Hong Kong/Los Angeles-based studio, Imagi, at his disposal, rookie writer/director, Kevin Monroe is a hardcore fan of the heroes, created by Kevin Eastman (now owner of the adult-themed comic book anthology magazine, Heavy Metal) and Peter Laird (one of the film's producers).
Monroe gives the film action without blood and humor without silliness, bringing in old and new fans. This is not the animated series from the late 80s, thank God. It's a PG-rated version of "300", "Sin City" (both films) and "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns", all works of comic book/graphic novel visionary, Frank Miller, whose now-legendary tenure of the comic book, "Daredevil" influence Eastman (I've met him at the NY Comicon in February 2007) and Laird to create the green team as a subversive parody. After seeing this film, a CGI-version of "Dark Knight" shouldn't be out of the question (Wise up, Warner Bros!!!).
The voice cast is also exceptional. No-name actors voice the heroes (no work for you, Corey Feldman), but that's fine. Patrick Stewart (the X-Men trilogy, the second Star Trek series, "American Dad") is regal as Winters. Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy: The TV series) and Chris Evans (the Fantastic Four films) are likable as allies April O'Neil and Casey Jones. Though her English needs work, Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) is sharp as Karai. Larry Fishburne (the Matrix trilogy) and Kevin Smith (the Viewaskew saga) are fun as the back-story narrator and a scaredy-cat diner cook, but the nicest yet saddest performance was made by the late, Oscar-nominated character actor Mako ("The Sand Pebbles", the Conan films, Aku of the "Samurai Jack" series) as the heroes' mentor/ adopted father, Splinter. Mako made a final, live-action performance in the vampire action-adventure, "Rise", starring Lucy Liu and Michael Chiklis, before this film.
And the plot's dramatics is refreshing. Raphael's animosity towards Leonardo for leaving NYC shows the audience that the film is pretty deep. Some old fans may lament the absence of characters from the first animated show, like alien mastermind (literally!!!) Krang and goofball thugs, Rocksteady and Bebop, but their participation in the film is necessary as colon cancer. Besides, Eastman and Laird didn't create them.
Any flaws? Should have been longer because it's too cool
maybe the word, "shell" should have been used to replace two "naughty" words, like on the current animated show
.nah, no flaws. Oh well. If you find CGI-animated family films dull as drywall, "TMNT" is a fun, necessary antidote.
After seeing this movie's low critic ratings, I was dubious about watching it. No more than five minutes into the movie, I knew that it would not be a waste of time. The soundtrack, sound effects, and general graphics made the movie an amazing experience. The fight sequences were beautifully orchestrated and fast-paced. The quips and humorous situations were balanced out with dark backdrops.
As a fan of the TMNT franchise, I found this movie very enjoyable and will probably watch it multiple times in the coming years. It isn't a movie for those who want to start into the TMNT storyline; the TV shows are the place to start. But this movie doesn't assume that all viewers know everything about TMNT, which makes it great for those who have no background in the storyline.
The story -- something to do with an ancient evil returning after 3,000 years -- plays like a multi-episode story arc of the TV series.
