In 1974, a hot-headed 19 year old named Michael Peterson decided he wanted to make a name for himself and so, with a homemade sawn-off shotgun and a head full of dreams he attempted to rob a post office. Swiftly apprehended and originally sentenced to seven years in jail, Peterson has subsequently been behind bars for 34 years, 30 of which have been spent in solitary confinement. During that time, Michael Petersen, the boy, faded away and 'Charles Bronson,' his superstar alter ego, took center stage. Inside the mind of Bronson - a scathing indictment of celebrity culture.
A young man who was sentenced to seven years in prison for robbing a post office ends up spending three decades in solitary confinement. During this time, his own personality is supplanted by his alter-ego, Charles Bronson.
Before their big breakthroughs with the very popular Inception and Drive, actor Tom Hardy and director Nicolas Winding Refn made Bronson, a biopic about the "most expensive prisoner" Michael Petersen aka Charles Bronson. Compared to Drive, it's actually quite hilarious while there was little sense of humour there. The amount of violence is just as prevalent and graphic, but the approach to the film is an ironically over-serious way and very self-aware of it's own silliness. Tom Hardy's performance is a forceful and loud one and has a delectable charm. It's a bizarre film. Unfortunately it lacks a lot of structure and is mainly built over a few (albiet chronological) funny/intense situations. While they are effective, it's essentially the same joke - Bronson rejecting authority because he can. It demonstrates the humane limits of punishment before they have to be inhumane.
It has been frequently compared to A Clockwork Orange for that theme and it shares a similar use of soundtrack using classical music over violence. It's clear that Refn has a great eye for a soundtrack after it being the most popular aspect of Drive, and there are some electronic tracks used here too that sound similar, specifically New Order's "Your Silent Face." The cinematography is mostly excellent here, using grainy minimalistic colour-coded framing that's very reminiscent of European cinema. While it has a great sense of humour, it juxtaposes with its point in a way that only feels like it works some of the time. As a sidenote, it's weird to see Peep Show's Super Hans in a film, especially as his character was the polar opposite.
7/10
Who is Bronson? Well, to begin with, his real name is Michael Gordon Peterson, Charles Bronson, the persona that would later envelop him, being a stage name he borrowed from the action movie star. But that doesn't even begin to answer the question. In fact, a better question is probably, why? Why is Bronson compelled to act in the violent manner he does (being known as Britain's most notorious prisoner)? What's his reasoning, his motivation, his desire, his endgame? If the filmmakers know, they're not telling. All we can do is sit back and observe his actions, and try to figure them out as best we can. He had a perfectly normal childhood, or at least normal enough to make his adult life puzzling. It doesn't seem like any major wrong has been committed against him, not at first. Yet he's seemingly filled with an untameable rage that can only be satisfied by short, brutal bouts of violence. He seems most at home in the film beating another man bloody and pissing on his body in a boxing match. And when events that could explain some of his rage eventually happen, such as the girl he's courting marrying another man, they seem like mere excuses for him to continue on in the way he always has. The man has spent over three decades in solitary confinement; perhaps the best explanation is that he's scared of what the real world has waiting for him.
Tom Hardy is absolutely phenomenal in one of the best performances of the twenty-first century; the fact that he wasn't even nominated for Best Actor is shameful. This is one of those roles where the actor is slamming on the gas pedal for practically the whole movie, and we just have to keep up.
Tom Hardy gives an amazing performance as Peterson, who took on the nickname Charlie Bronson, after the "Death Wish" actor.
