Hammer Films meets chop-socky Hong Kong. While lecturing in the Far East, Professor Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) tells his students of a doomed village in China that becomes cursed every year at the time of the 7th moon. Van Helsing is persuaded by a family of kung fu experts to rid the village of the 7 vampires that torment its citizens.
While lecturing in China, Van Helsing agrees to help seven kung fu trained siblings reclaim their ancestral mountain village, now the domain of seven powerful vampires and their army of undead slaves.
Hammer films can tend to be rather stodgy and talky. While the first half of this film moves rather slow and is full of exposition, the second half really kicks up some dust as we get kung fu fighting vampires getting sliced, kicked, punched and burned with wild abandon. Colorful lighting, well-choreographed fights and reliable old Peter Cushing make this one of Hammer's most entertaining films. This film heavily influenced the Hong Kong horror/action/comedy film boom of the 80s with films like ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND and MR. VAMPIRE borrowing much of the vampire look from this film and adding much more Chinese folklore to the vampire mythos, thus making them infinitely more entertaining than this hybrid.
Peter Cushing returns one last time as Van Helsing for Hammer films. In fact, it wold be Cushing's next to the last feature film appearance for Hammer (following it up with SHATTER, also made in Hong Kong, hot on the heels of this.) While not HORROR OF DRACULA, the outrageous premise is a lot of fun to watch. (Had this done better financially, a sequel was planned and scripted, KALI: DEVIL-BRIDE OF DRACULA, which would have taken the Count to India. Unfortunately, distribution problems--and a badly chopped-up version called THE 7 BROTHERS MEET DRACULA--crippled it at the box office.) Like THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, the basic plot owes a nod towards Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI, with Van Helsing enlisting the aid of martial artists to rid a village of vampires who prey upon it. The product of an uneasy alliance between Hammer Films and the Shaw Brothers, Hammer's last vampire film has a unique look all its own. A great late-night fright film.
